On Monday (21/5/2024), the Community Service Department of the Justicia Student Council (DEMA) at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), successfully organized a blood drive in collaboration with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Yogyakarta. This humanitarian initiative aimed not only to provide a physical contribution in the form of blood but also to support PMI’s mission in ensuring an adequate blood supply for urgent medical needs. This activity also aims to raise awareness of the importance of social engagement and compassion among the academic community of the UGM Faculty of Law, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages.
The blood donation drive attracted a significant turnout from the UGM Faculty of Law community, including faculty members, students, and administrative staff. The enthusiasm displayed by the participants was remarkable, reflecting a strong commitment to social responsibility and community service. This event not only provided much-needed blood supplies but also fostered a sense of solidarity and compassion within the academic environment.
The collaboration with PMI Yogyakarta was instrumental in the success of this event. PMI representatives were present to guide the donation process, ensuring that all health protocols were followed and that donors were well-informed about the importance of their contributions. The partnership exemplifies how academic institutions can work hand-in-hand with humanitarian organizations to address pressing health needs in society.
In addition to the immediate benefits of blood donation, the event served as a platform for educating participants about the critical role of blood in medical treatments and emergencies. Many attendees expressed their newfound understanding of how their contributions could save lives, reinforcing the idea that every drop of blood counts. This aligns with the SDG goal of ensuring access to essential health services and affordable medicines for all.
The event was not only a one-time initiative but is envisioned to become a regular activity in the coming years. DEMA Justicia aims to organize blood donation drives every few months, creating a sustainable culture of giving and community support within the Faculty of Law. This commitment to ongoing engagement reflects a broader understanding of the importance of health and well-being in society.
The success of the blood donation drive at UGM's Faculty of Law is a testament to the power of collective action in addressing health challenges. It highlights the role of educational institutions in promoting social responsibility and community engagement. By fostering a culture of giving, UGM is contributing to the broader goal of ensuring healthy lives and well-being for all, in line with the SDGs.
