The Speech and Law Debate Society (SPECIALITY) of the UGM Faculty of Law brought home third place at the Marvelaw UNNES Competition (MUC) 2024 National Law Debate Competition on Monday, November 4, 2024. The competition carried the theme "Optimizing the Role of the General Elections Commission (KPU) in Realizing Democratic Consolidation Through Simultaneous Regional Elections (Pilkada Serentak)." The SPECIALITY FH UGM delegation comprised Muhammad Zakiuddin Al Farisi (Class of 2022), Machiko Destria Sugita (Class of 2021), and Ursula Lara Pagitta Tarigan (Class of 2023), with Amalia Tri Hapsari (Class of 2024) as the team official. The delegation advanced through three rounds Preliminary, Semi-Final, and Grand Final, ultimately finishing third, with Machiko Destria Sugita also earning the Best Speaker award.
The preliminary round (October 26, 2024, online) debated the motion "The Urgency of Lifting the Ban on Campaigning on University Campuses in the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections." The semi-final (November 3, 2024, at the Universitas Negeri Semarang Faculty of Law) debated "The Urgency of Reformulating the Minimum Candidacy Threshold Rules for Regional Heads Following Constitutional Court Decision No. 60 in the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections." The third-place playoff motion was "The Legal Position of Amicus Curiae as Consideration for Constitutional Judges in Election Dispute Cases (PHPU)."
The delegation extends its gratitude to all who supported them through this competition, and hopes this achievement will inspire fellow students to sharpen their critical thinking and advocacy skills in pursuit of excellence at the national and international levels.
