Leiden University in the Netherlands once again organized the International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition this year. The competition has been held since 2007 as a forum for law students to deepen their understanding of international criminal law based on the Rome Statute while competing academically. The competition, held from 22–27 May, was attended by 60 universities from 44 countries across various regions of the world. During the six-day event, delegates participated in the preliminary rounds, quarterfinals, and final rounds at Leiden University, while the grand final was conducted at the International Criminal Court (ICC) Headquarters in The Hague.
As in the previous two years, the Faculty of Law Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM) once again sent a delegation to pursue achievements in the Netherlands. The delegation consisted of Prof. Dr. Eddy O. S. Hiariej, S.H., M.Hum. as coach, Devita Putri and Rizky Kemawas as assistant coaches, Nabil Lubis as manager, Yoga Perwira as assistant manager, and six student competitors: Kay Jessica (head of delegation), Wyncent Halim, Regina Wangsa, Bidadari Respaty, M. Ryandaru, and Canna Zahra Octhalia.
The case presented in the competition concerned piracy involving minors and the alleged involvement of state authorities. During the proceedings, three parties from different teams presented arguments before judges acting as the panel of adjudicators. The arguments were constructed from the perspectives of the government, the prosecution, and the victims. The applicable legal framework combined provisions relating to crimes against humanity and war crimes.
As the sole representative from Indonesia, the FH UGM delegation successfully advanced to the semifinals and secured fourth place overall. Wyncent Halim also received the Best Oralist for the Prosecution award during the awarding ceremony in Scheveningen, outperforming more than 100 participants acting as prosecutors. It is hoped that these achievements can be maintained and further improved in future competitions, beginning with the recruitment process initiated by the Community of International Moot Court FH UGM.
