ALSA ELOC 2024: Deciphering Indonesia’s Labor Law: Addressing Unemployment and Job Concerns

ALSA English Legal Opinion Competition (ELOC) 2024 is a legal opinion writing competition in English, focusing on current legal issues. This competition is a work program of ALSA LC UGM under the English Development Division. It is held as a form of implementation of the three ALSA pillars: Legally Skilled, Academically Committed, and Internationally Minded. ALSA ELOC 2024 aims to provide a platform for ALSA LC UGM members and undergraduate students of the Faculty of Law UGM to broaden their legal knowledge in line with the chosen topic, enhance their English language skill , apply legal knowledge to address issues of unemployment and labor in Indonesia, and develop communication skills and the ability to consider various perspectives. 

The grand theme of ALSA ELOC 2024 is Deciphering Indonesia’s  Labor Law: Addressing Unemployment and Job ConcernsThis theme focuses on analyzing and understanding Indonesia’s Labor Law, such as its crucial role in balancing the rights and obligations between workers and employers, the causes of unemployment in Indonesia, and the need to develop economic conditions and workforce skills to reduce unemployment and improve job quality in the country. 

This year, ALSA ELOC 2024 held its Opening Ceremony on Friday, May 17, 2024, in Room 3.1.1 at the Faculty of Law UGM. The event began with a talkshow presented by Susilo Andi Darma, S.H., M.Hum., who spoke about the importance of understanding and evaluating the legal framework that governs the relationship between employers and employees, especially amid the economic and social challenges Indonesia is facing. The event continued with a workshop session led by Ibrahim Hanif, S.H., LL.M., on the topic "How to Write a Good  Legal Opinion". This topic aimed to provide participants with effective writing strategies for addressing complex legal issues in labor law in Indonesia. 

Following the opening ceremony, the case brief was released via email. The writing and submission legal opinion period for participants lasted one week, from the day of the opening ceremony until Tuesday, May 21, 2024. The Judging Period took place from Wednesday, May 22, to Thursday, May 30, 2024, with all submissions evaluated by three judges from the Faculty of Law UGM: Prof. Dr. Agustinus Supriyanto, S.H., M.Si., Ibrahim Hanif, S.H., LL.M., and Dr. Pramuwardhani Dewi, S.H., M.Hum. 

The final part of ALSA ELOC 2024 was the The Closing Ceremony , held via Zoom Meeting on Friday, May 31, 2024. The Closing Ceremony began with Closing Remarks  from Rifada Khalida Chaerunie (Project Officer of ALSA ELOC 2024) and Marsa Azzahra Ratu Mariqal Albar (Director of ALSA LC UGM 2023/2024), followed by the announcement of the competition winners: 1st Place: Dimas Satrya Gerhana Mahardika; 2nd Place: Raden Fresina Aisyah Choerupriyatna; 2nd Place (tie): Ivana Yoan Haryanto and Citra Swastikarahma 

The Closing Ceremony marked the conclusion of all ALSA ELOC 2024 events, with the hope that participants gained valuable experience to support their future career journeys.
