UGM Faculty of Law Conducts Legal Education Program at Sleman Correctional Facility as Part of Community Service and Support for the SDGs

On Friday (May 16, 2025), the Faculty of Law at Universitas Gadjah Mada, through its Legal Aid Consultation Center (PKBH), conducted a legal education program at Class IIB Sleman Correctional Facility. This initiative represents the faculty's implementation of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, particularly in the area of community service. Moreover, the program aligns with the Faculty's commitment to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 16, which promotes the development of inclusive, just, and effective institutions.

The legal education session featured two faculty members as speakers: Dr. Muhammad Fatahillah Akbar, S.H., LL.M., from the Department of Criminal Law, and Virga Dwi Efendi, S.H., LL.M., from the Department of State Administrative Law. Dr. Akbar delivered a presentation on “The Rights of Inmates under the New Criminal Code,” aiming to provide inmates with a deeper understanding of criminal law and their legal rights under the revised code. Meanwhile, Mr. Virga presented a topic entitled “The Importance of Business Licensing for Individuals Starting a Business”, intended to equip inmates with practical legal knowledge for post-release entrepreneurship.

The materials were delivered interactively and engagingly, which encouraged active participation from the audience. The discussion session was productive, with participants posing insightful questions related to the topics presented. The speakers responded clearly and constructively, offering practical solutions that fostered an atmosphere of education and empowerment.

This legal education activity is expected to serve not only as a means of disseminating legal knowledge but also as a starting point for the social reintegration of former inmates. With sufficient legal awareness, inmates are better prepared to make positive contributions to society upon release. Ultimately, this initiative demonstrates the Faculty of Law UGM’s ongoing commitment to advancing an inclusive, peaceful, and just society through legal empowerment and education.
