ICT FH UGM Held a Short Course on Taxation and Constitutional Law in Collaboration with the Tax Law Department of UGM and Leiden University

The Indonesian Center for Tax Law of FH UGM, in collaboration with the Tax Law Department, held a two day short course on taxation and constitutional law, on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 23rd and 24th, 2024. The course took place in room 3.1.1 and was attented by guests and participants from various institutions and universities.

The short course invited Armin Cuyvers, a professor of European law in Leiden University, as the guest speaker with specific expertise in European constitutional law, regional integration, sovereignty, democracy, Brexit, and confederalism.

The course was divided into four sessions with four different topics in each session. During the first day, Professor Armin presented the topics of Tax, Sovereignty and Democracy: National Constitutions in a Globalizing Reality, and Comparing the EU and the ASEAN Model: Different Responses to Similar Challenges? The first two topics were an introduction to the European Union (EU) and the European law, which included a comparison between the EU and the ASEAN in facing similar challenges.

On the second day, Professor Armin brought topics with the title: Updating Sovereignty (and the Power to Tax) in a Global and Digital Reality? And Updating Democracy and Tax Benefits in a Global and Digital Reality: What to do in Indonesia and Southeast Asia? These topics emphasized more on taxation which further intrigued the participants.

Even though the course was delivered in English, that did not stop the participants from raising complicated yet interesting questions that led to a fruitful discussion. Professor Armin also made several pop culture references and witty remarks by using internet memes which made the course more lively and enjoyable. The course ended with a group photo with Professor Armin and all the participants.
