The Master of Notarial Law Study Program at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), organized a This Guest Lecture “Sharia Economic Dispute Resolution (Comparative Study Between Indonesia and Malaysia)" on Thursday (24/04/2024). This event was mandatory for students of the Master of Notarial Law Program taking the Banking Law course and open to students taking Banking Law in other programs, such as the Master of Legal Science in Yogyakarta and the Master of Legal Science at the Jakarta Campus. During its implementation, the total number of participating students was 195, with 120 attending in-person at Room 3.1.1 of the Faculty of Law UGM and 75 students attending online via Zoom Meeting.
This Guest Lecture featured Dr. Sodiq Omoola and Dr. Khotibul Umam, S.H., LL.M. as speakers. Dr. Sodiq Omoola is a lecturer at the Ahmad Ibrahim Kuliyyah of Laws (AIKOL), International Islamic University Malaysia. Meanwhile, Dr. Khotibul Umam, S.H., LL.M. is a lecturer for the Banking Law course in the Master of Notarial Law Program. This Guest Lecture had two main objectives. First, to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of Sharia principles in the banking sector and their enforcement in law. Second, to facilitate students in conducting comparative legal analysis of Sharia economic dispute resolution, with a special focus on Sharia-compliant banking in the contexts of Indonesia and Malaysia.
In the material presentation session, Dr. Khotibul Umam, S.H., LL.M. explained Sharia principles and their application in Indonesia's Sharia-compliant banking, products and activities of Sharia-compliant banking in Indonesia, and Sharia economic dispute resolution in Indonesia. Meanwhile, Dr. Sodiq Omoola explained Sharia economics and its dispute resolution from the perspective of Malaysian law, covering topics such as the principles and scope of Sharia economics in Malaysia, dispute resolution mechanisms in Islamic economics, an overview of the Malaysian legal framework on Islamic economics, fatwas and Malaysian court jurisdiction in Islamic finance, Sharia non-compliance risks, and the current state of Islamic economics. In response to the material presented by both speakers, students responded with high enthusiasm through active questions posed during the Q&A session.
This This Guest Lecture represents the commitment of the management and students of the Master of Notarial Law Study Program at the Faculty of Law UGM to enhancing the quality of education, which aligns with points four and seventeen of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by broadening students' legal knowledge through comparative studies on Sharia economic dispute resolution in Indonesia and Malaysia.
