UGM's Master of Laws Program, Jakarta Campus, in partnership with the Urban Poor People's Network (JRMK), held a legal study session on resolving land disputes affecting urban poor residents in DKI Jakarta Province, on Saturday, August 20. Held at the Kebon Bayam Community Hall, the session was attended by 12 local residents.
The session was opened by Gugun, Coordinator of JRMK, and Dr. Rikardo Simarmata, S.H., Head of UGM's Master of Laws Program, Jakarta Campus.
Gugun explained that the purpose of the meeting was to examine the land status in Kampung Kebon Bayam. Around 600 households have been affected by a stadium development project undertaken by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government. As compensation, the provincial government plans to build low-cost apartments for residents, funded through PT Jakarta Propertindo.
“This study was conducted due to a request from JRMK regarding the legal aspects of issues in Kampung Kebon Bayam and Kampung Muka. Therefore, a legal study was prepared to provide a legal opinion and recommendations to be used as appropriate. The results of this study can be used to engage in dialogue with PT Jakarta Propertindo,” said Rikardo in his remarks.
The session continued with a discussion between Kampung Kebon Bayam residents and the study team from UGM's Master of Laws Program and JRMK. Residents took turns sharing the history of Kampung Kebon Bayam with the study team, which asked numerous questions to better understand the issues at hand. The discussion concluded that residents primarily want long-term security to continue living in Kampung Kebon Bayam.
