The Satria Paramartha Moot Court Community (Sparta) of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM), once again organized the internal moot court competition for the Faculty of Law Dean’s Cup (PDFH). The competition was open to FH UGM students and, this year, was contested by five student organizations. Judges from various legal professions, including academics, police officers, advocates, judges, and prosecutors, were invited to serve on the judging panel.
The PDFH competition was officially opened with a gong ceremony led by Bambang Wiryanto, S.Si., Head of Prevention and Community Empowerment at the National Narcotics Agency of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (BNNP DIY), together with the Dean of FH UGM, Prof. M. Hawin, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D. Following the opening ceremony, the participating delegations performed their respective moot court simulations throughout the afternoon. On Monday (16/5), three delegations competed, while the remaining two took part in the competition the following day. On Tuesday evening (17/5), the committee announced the winners during the closing ceremony of the 11th PDFH competition in 2016. Eight awards were presented, namely Best Court Clerk, Best Witness, Best Defendant, Best Case File, Best Public Prosecutor, Best Defense Counsel, Best Panel of Judges, and Best Trial Simulation.
Commonly known as PDFH, this year’s moot court competition carried the theme “Resolving Narcotics-Related Cases from the Perspective of Indonesian Positive Law.” The theme was chosen in response to the growing public discussion surrounding narcotics-related issues. Narcotics were also considered a common threat with significant potential to undermine the nation’s social and political life. Nathan Dipos Fajar, Chair of the 11th PDFH Organizing Committee, conveyed this during his opening remarks on Monday (16/5) at Building I of FH UGM. “We hope that everyone involved in this event will understand the dangers of narcotics and their damaging impact on our nation,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sparta Director Muhammad Rizal Rawi expressed his hopes for the students participating in the competition. He emphasized that students should not only excel academically but also develop practical skills through moot court activities as preparation for their future careers as prospective law enforcers.
The Head of BNNP DIY was also invited to officially open the 11th PDFH competition. As he was unable to attend, he was represented by Bambang Wiryanto. In his remarks, Bambang Wiryanto expressed his hope that the event would provide participants with a realistic understanding of the increasingly serious narcotics problem. He further emphasized the importance of being able to develop solutions to address the issue.
