On Friday (October 8, 2023), the Research and Publication Unit (URP) of the Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University hosted a discussion on big data and legal research. This event was part of the Bulaksumur Legal Discussion series organized by the URP at the UGM Faculty of Law to deepen understanding of various types and methodologies in legal research. This aligns with UGM’s initiative to develop research that supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and contributes to achieving the UGM Faculty of Law Research Roadmap for 2022–2026.
The event featured a digital forensics expert, Wishnu Agung Baroto, SST.MBA. The discussion with Wishnu Agung Baroto was held in person at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University, and was attended by approximately 30 students, including both undergraduate and graduate students from the Faculty of Law. In addition, students from outside the UGM Faculty of Law also attended because the discussion topic was interesting and relevant to various academic backgrounds.
Wishnu Agung Baroto provided an explanation of Big Data and the Big Data processing strategies that are widely used in this era of artificial intelligence. In addition, Wishnu Agung Baroto also shared his work experience as a professional in the legal field, specifically as a digital forensics expert. Following his presentation, Wishnu Agung Baroto engaged in a discussion with participants of the 1st Bulaksumur Legal Discussion Series, moderated by Muhammad Thoriq Irnando. The discussion was interactive, with participants delving deeper into their own experiences related to the topic and responding to the solutions provided by the speaker. For example, participants raised concerns about the use of artificial intelligence in processing Big Data, noting the necessity of “interpreting” every decision made, and many other interesting cases were shared by the participants.
