UGM Takes Second Place in the 2025 VLC Legal Opinion Competition, Discussing Legal Issues in Cross-Border E-Commerce

Two students from the Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University, Shelina Theodora and Dhea Praja Gupta, won second place in the Legal Opinion Competition at the 2025 Veteran Legal Competition (VLC). The competition was organized by the Faculty of Law at the “Veteran” National Development University in Jakarta on May 16–17, 2025. This year, the VLC Legal Opinion Competition featured the subtheme: “The Sustainability of Cross-Border E-Commerce in the Face of Business Policies and Competition in Indonesia”. This theme challenges participants to analyze the legal dynamics of cross-border marketplaces , particularly in addressing challenges related to competition regulations, intellectual property, and international trade under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).

In this competition, participants were not only required to write legal opinions but also to present them in person before a panel of judges, just as a professional legal consultant would when advising a client. The UGM delegation excelled by presenting sharp and well-structured arguments that covered national and regional legal aspects as well as relevant international legal provisions. Accompanied by Virga Dwi Efendi, S.H., LL.M., as their faculty advisor, the UGM delegation demonstrated a deep understanding of the legal framework applicable in Indonesia. The UGM delegation possessed sharp analytical skills, evidenced by their ability to link this legal framework to global practices and cross-border digital economic policy trends.

Through this achievement, the UGM Faculty of Law has once again demonstrated its ability to produce students who excel academically and are capable of addressing contemporary legal issues with precision and a cross-border perspective. This experience serves as an important foundation for students to play a broader role in the global realm of digital law and policy.
