On 23 December 2020, it was announced that three teams from the Faculty of Law UGM had successfully achieved 2nd, 4th, and 6th place in the Essay Competition organized by the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia. In this competition, WRI Indonesia collaborated with two universities in Papua, namely Universitas Cenderawasih and Universitas Papua. The theme of this year’s competition was “Natural Resources: Tenurial Issues and Local Wisdom-Based Resolution Mechanisms in Papua.”
The first team, consisting of Pricillia Putri (FH UGM 2017) and Kerin Dharmawan (FH UGM 2017), under the supervision of Sartika Intaning Pradhani, S.H., M.H., successfully achieved second place in the competition. Pricillia and Kerin wrote an essay entitled “Diplomasi Lokal: Paradigma Baru dalam Menyelesaikan Permasalahan Tata Batas Darat Negara di Wilayah Perbatasan Darat Republik Indonesia dan Papua Nugini” (Local Diplomacy: A New Paradigm in Addressing State Land Boundary Issues in the Land Border Region Between the Republic of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea).
The second team, consisting of I Wayan Bhayu Eka Pratama (FH UGM 2017) and Ni Nengah Dhea Riska Putri Nandita (FH UGM 2017), successfully achieved fourth place in the competition. Bhayu and Dhea wrote and presented an essay entitled “Sumber Daya Hutan Papua: Antara Kebijakan, Permasalahan, dan Ius Constituendum dalam Kerangka Otonomi Khusus” (Papua’s Forest Resources: Between Policies, Challenges, and Ius Constituendum within the Framework of Special Autonomy).
The third team, consisting of Shafira Dinda Ariefti (FH UGM 2018), Muhammad Abdul Malik (FH UGM 2018), and Nugroho Adhi Pratama (FH UGM 2018), under the supervision of Sartika Intaning Pradhani, S.H., M.H., successfully achieved sixth place in the competition. Dinda, Abdul, and Nugroho wrote an essay entitled “Quo Vadis Peran Pemerintah Pada Proses Pelepasan Tanah Ulayat Menjadi Tanah Negara: Studi Kasus Masyarakat Hukum Adat Papua dalam Pusaran Hak Guna Usaha” (Quo Vadis: The Role of the Government in the Process of Releasing Customary Land into State Land: A Case Study of Indigenous Peoples in Papua within the Context of Cultivation Rights).
The competition began in September 2020 with the preparation of essay manuscripts, followed by a selection process. In November 2020, several teams that successfully advanced to the final presentation round were announced. The first, second, and third teams representing the Faculty of Law UGM delivered their presentations on the same day, 2 December 2020. The three teams conducted various research activities, both through normative research using literature studies and interviews with several sources to analyze the issues, draw conclusions, and formulate the best recommendations. These findings were then presented in their essay manuscripts and delivered during the presentation round. Although the final round of the competition was postponed due to the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic, this did not hinder FH UGM student teams from thoroughly preparing for the online final round of the scientific writing competition. This achievement is expected to contribute to research in the fields of agrarian law, customary law, and law in general, while also inspiring and encouraging students of the Faculty of Law Universitas Gadjah Mada to continue developing their competitive spirit.
