The UGM Law Student Scientific Writing Team won third place in the Scientific Writing Competition at the Riau Law Fair 2019, held at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Riau, Pekanbaru, from 21–24 March 2019. The UGM team secured third place through the work of Anindita Irvan Wiryawan (2016), Melodia Puji Inggarwati (2016), and Nikolaus Baptista Ruma (2017). Organized by the Student Executive Board of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Riau, the competition carried the theme “Legal Politics in the Formation of Legislation on Indigenous Peoples in Indonesia.” The competition was attended by 60 teams of law students from universities across Indonesia. The preliminary round received 40 abstracts from 40 participating teams. The competition then proceeded to the final round, where 10 finalists presented their papers before a panel of judges alongside teams from various universities.
The UGM team chose the sub-theme “The Urgency of Establishing Legislation on Indigenous Peoples” and focused specifically on the management of customary forests in Papua. Their paper was entitled “The Establishment of Legislation on Indigenous Peoples as a Step toward Reformulating the Management of Customary Forests in Papua Province.” This was the first time the Faculty of Law, Universitas Riau, had organized the Riau Law Fair. The event focused on the formulation of regulations concerning indigenous peoples and the fulfillment of their rights.
The UGM team expressed their hope that UGM Law students would continue to maintain their achievements in various fields, particularly in scientific writing. Experiences in academic writing are expected to contribute to students’ academic development while also expanding their networks with fellow law students through both national and international competitions. — Anindita Irvan Wiryawan
