Sri Wiyanti Eddyono Serves as a Speaker at an ICJR Training Session on the 2023 Criminal Code and the Rights of Victims of Sexual Violence

On Wednesday (February 5, 2025), Sri Wiyanti Eddyono, Ph.D., a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (FH UGM), was invited as a speaker at a training session organized by the Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (ICJR). This event was made possible with support from The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI). It focused on key issues in the 2023 Criminal Code, particularly the scope of criminal offenses related to adultery and cohabitation, prioritizing safe abortion for victims of sexual violence, and formulating joint advocacy strategies.

During the forum, Sri Wiyanti offered an academic perspective on the importance of placing victim protection at the center of all criminal law policies. She emphasized that the 2023 Criminal Code must be interpreted and implemented while upholding human rights principles. The participation of an academic from the UGM Faculty of Law in this training underscores the university’s contribution to bridging the gap between research, advocacy, and legal practice in the field.

Sri Wiyanti’s participation is also closely tied to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The issues of protecting victims of sexual violence and strengthening a fair legal system support SDG 5 (Gender Equality) by ensuring women’s rights are protected, SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through advocacy for safe abortion for victims of violence, and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by advocating for an inclusive legal system that respects human rights. Through this involvement, the UGM Faculty of Law demonstrates its role not only as an educational institution but also as a strategic partner in the agenda of legal reform and sustainable development.
