The Master’s Program in Business Law and State Law (MHBK) at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (FH UGM), is once again hosting a lecture by an international guest lecturer. This guest lecture will focus on the theme “Dismantling Democratic Change in Asia: Constitutional Issues, Patterns, and Drivers.” The guest lecture will be held in Room B.2.5 of the UGM Faculty of Law on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. WIB.
The event featured Dr. Dian AH Shah, Associate Professor and Vice Director of the Center for Asia Law Studies (CALS) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Law School, as the guest speaker. This lecture is an integral part of the “Constitutional Theory and Law” course in the MHBK program at the UGM Faculty of Law.
During this session, Dr. Dian AH Shah provided an in-depth analysis of the phenomenon of democratic dismantling across various Asian countries. The discussion focused primarily on identifying constitutional issues, the patterns employed, and the driving factors behind these changes.
This presentation is based on Dr. Dian’s latest publication in the International Journal of Constitutional Law (I-CON), one of the world’s most prestigious journals of constitutional studies. The article in question is titled, “Dismantling democratic change in Asia: Modalities and weapons of choice” (Volume 22, Issue 4, October 2024).
This lecture is designed to provide students, faculty, and legal practitioners with a comprehensive understanding of current constitutional law dynamics and the challenges to democracy currently facing the Asian region. Additionally, this event is part of the efforts to internationalize the MHBK Program at the Faculty of Law, UGM, and to strengthen global academic networks.
This guest lecture is open to the public and is mandatory for students enrolled in the “Constitutional Theory and Law” course. To make the most of the limited discussion time with the guest speaker, students are also encouraged to read the speaker’s published paper prior to the lecture. The participants’ enthusiasm was evident in the active discussion and the critical questions posed to the speaker.
Through this event, the UGM Faculty of Law’s Master’s Program in Business and Public Law continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing legal education that is relevant, responsive to global issues, and supports the achievement of quality education as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4).
