The fourth session in the Legal Outreach series — a collaboration between FH UGM's Department of Islamic Law and the Sleman Religious Court — was successfully held on March 25, 2022, on the theme "The Legal Status of Children and Related Issues in Indonesia." This 4th installment drew 96 attendees from various backgrounds, joining virtually, with speakers Dr. Hartini, S.H., M.Si. (lecturer, Department of Islamic Law, FH UGM) and Juharni, S.H., M.H. (Judge, Sleman Religious Court).
The first presentation, delivered by Dr. Hartini, covered several key points, including an examination of how children are addressed under marriage law across various regulations — such as the Marriage Law, the Child Protection Law, and the Civil Code, among others. She also reviewed the classification of children's legal status within marriage law, and connected the discussion to Constitutional Court Decision No. 46/PUU-VIII/2010 to give a more comprehensive picture.
The second presentation, by Juharni, opened by discussing children's status and standing in general terms before narrowing in on how children's legal standing is treated within the jurisdiction of the religious courts. She also covered the legal and biological status of legitimate children and their respective attached rights, including inheritance rights. This second presentation also touched on domestic violence (KDRT), noting that child neglect falls under acts of domestic violence.
The session closed with a Q&A segment, in which seven participants — from among practitioners, academics, and students — raised questions related to the topics covered by the speakers. The event then concluded at 3:00 PM.
