UGM Faculty of Law Student Claims Third Place at Legal Manuscript Contest 2024 Indictment Drafting Competition

The Indictment Drafting Competition (Kompetisi Surat Dakwaan) is a competition in which participants draft an indictment document (surat dakwaan) based on a set of case facts determined by the organizing committee. The competition is designed to train prospective law graduates to think critically, carefully, accurately, and comprehensively in conducting juridical analysis of a given case. The ultimate aim is to ensure that the indictments produced are neither obscure nor legally void — that is, free from obscuur libel. A well-drafted indictment is an indispensable skill for law graduates who enter the legal profession, particularly those who choose to pursue criminal litigation as a Public Prosecutor (Jaksa Penuntut Umum).

The competition was held under the theme of corruption offenses in the tin mining sector in Sumatra. The competition ran from 7 October 2024 to 16 November 2024, with a closing ceremony on 30 November 2024. A total of 27 universities participated, fielding 51 teams in total. Universitas Gadjah Mada alone entered four competing teams.

In this competition, three UGM students from the Faculty of Law — Adi Suryadinata (Team Leader), Ahista Putri Safnatunnajah (Member), and Kendrick Chang (Member) — took third place with a cumulative score of 750 points, finishing behind second place Universitas Negeri Semarang (775 points) and first place Universitas Islam Indonesia (785 points).

The 200-page indictment document they produced in a remarkably short time is hoped to be of lasting value to the team and to others who encounter it — particularly given that, in the professional world, indictments are frequently rejected or challenged due to deficiencies in either their formal or substantive requirements. The competition organized by the Faculty of Law, Universitas Lampung, therefore serves as an invaluable learning experience for law students who will one day become the next generation of law enforcement professionals.
