MIH and AMAN Indonesia Collaborate to Raise Awareness of Gender Equality and Peace

The Master’s Program in Law at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (MIH FH UGM) is proud to host a National Seminar titled “Women, Peace, and Security.” The event took place on Friday (November 22, 2024) at the UGM Faculty of Law Auditorium. The event featured two inspiring figures who have dedicated themselves to the issues of gender equality and peace: Yuniyanti Chuzaifah (Chair of the National Commission on Violence Against Women, 2010–2014) and Dwi Rubiyanti Kholifah (Country Representative for AMAN Indonesia and She Build Peace Indonesia). The seminar was moderated by Diantika Rindam Floranti, S.H., LL.M., a lecturer at the UGM Faculty of Law.

The seminar provided an in-depth discussion of the challenges faced by women in a society still steeped in patriarchal culture. Yuniyanti Chuzaifah explained how women are often positioned as vulnerable objects, resulting in their rights being overlooked in public decision-making. She also emphasized that strengthening women’s rights is not only crucial for achieving justice but is also a fundamental component in building sustainable peace.

Meanwhile, Dwi Rubiyanti Kholifah shared her experiences regarding the advocacy work carried out by AMAN Indonesia, particularly in fostering dialogue among community groups to support gender equality and social harmony. She explained that women play a strategic role as agents of peace, and when empowered, they can have a significant impact on social and economic development.

During the interactive discussion, the seminar also highlighted various case studies drawn from the real-world experiences of the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) and AMAN. Participants gained insights into the challenges of gender advocacy across diverse cultural and legal contexts, as well as strategies and solutions that can be implemented to advance gender equality in Indonesia.

This event not only served as a forum for discussion but also marked the beginning of a partnership between the Master’s Program in Law and AMAN Indonesia. This collaboration will encompass strategic programs—such as scholarships, joint research, and internship programs—designed to support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UGM’s Master’s Program in Law aims to make significant contributions to SDGs 1 (No Poverty), 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), and 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

The Master of Law program at the Faculty of Law, UGM, hopes this seminar will serve as a significant first step in the collective effort to mainstream gender equality as a prerequisite for sustainable peace. This commitment not only reflects UGM’s vision as a leading educational institution but also its strategic role in building a just society in accordance with the values of Pancasila and the principles of international law.
