The Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University, through its International Master of Laws (LLM) program, successfully hosted a guest lecture titled “Artificial Intelligence in Science and Research” on Thursday (September 25, 2025). The event featured Stefan Noack, a Research Associate at Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau in Germany and a doctoral candidate in a joint doctoral program at Kazakh-American Free University in Kazakhstan. The discussion was moderated by Prof. Dr. Thomas Schmitz, DAAD Lecturer in Law at UGM.
In this guest lecture, the discussion focused on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in scientific research. The material presented covered how AI can support academic work, an understanding of how ChatGPT and various other generative AI tools work, and mastery of prompt engineering techniques to produce more accurate outputs. Additionally, the lecture highlighted strategies for minimizing the risks of disinformation and the “hallucination” phenomenon associated with AI, while also providing a critical comparison of different AI platforms so that participants could use them appropriately as partners in critical thinking, rather than merely as automated tools.
The event was held in a hybrid format, with the speaker joining via video conference from Germany, while the moderator and participants attended in person at the UGM Faculty of Law. Participants included MIH and LLM students enrolled in the Legal Research Methodology course, as well as students from the International Undergraduate Program (IUP).
The organization of this public lecture aligns with UGM’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This event contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by strengthening the capacity of students and researchers to utilize new technologies in legal education and scientific research. Additionally, this lecture supports SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by fostering understanding and innovation regarding the use of AI in the legal field. From the perspective of ethics and integrity, this event aligns with SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) as it promotes the ethical use of AI to strengthen legal research grounded in justice. Equally important, this public lecture contributes to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through international collaboration by featuring experts from Germany and Kazakhstan, while also strengthening global academic networks within the UGM community.
Through this event, the UGM Faculty of Law hopes to equip students with the critical skills needed to use AI as an intellectual partner, rather than merely an automated tool. With this enhanced understanding, students are expected to conduct legal research that is more professional, ethical, and responsible.
