The Faculty of Law at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM) has implemented a new smoking policy through Dean's Regulation (Peraturan Dekan/Perdek) 2023, which stipulates that smoking is permitted only in designated areas established by the faculty.
The policy is designed to strike a balance between the rights of smokers and the comfort and well-being of non-smokers within the campus community. Each designated smoking area has been clearly marked and equipped with an ashtray to maintain cleanliness and order on campus.
FH UGM also makes clear that smoking outside the designated areas constitutes a violation and may be subject to sanctions under applicable regulations. All members of the campus community are expected to comply with this policy so that a disciplined and mutually respectful academic environment can be maintained.
This step is in line with FH UGM's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — specifically SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), by creating a campus environment that protects the health of all its members, and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), by ensuring that campus public spaces are managed in an orderly, clean, and inclusive manner for all users.
Dean's Regulation 2023 represents a tangible expression of FH UGM's commitment to creating a healthy, disciplined, and conducive learning environment — while providing a designated and orderly space for smokers that does not infringe on the rights of others.
