The Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University (FH UGM) held a training session on the use of portable fire extinguishers (APAR) under the theme “Building a Culture of Preparedness and Emergency Response” on Friday (November 21, 2025). This event is part of the faculty’s efforts to improve disaster preparedness, strengthen the campus community’s knowledge of workplace safety, and create a learning environment that is safe and responsive to potential emergencies.
The training began with a presentation by Nunu Lutfi, ST., M.Ec.Dev., Head of the UGM K5L Emergency Response Team. In his presentation, he explained basic concepts regarding fire, the “Triangle of Fire” theory, and various fire suppression methods, including oxygen isolation, fuel decomposition, and cooling with water. In addition, participants were introduced to the components of fire extinguishers, their ideal placement, how to check the pressure gauge, and the importance of routine inspections to ensure the equipment functions optimally. This material was supplemented with an explanation of UGM’s active protection systems, including the hydrant network, sprinklers, and other self-rescue equipment in accordance with campus safety standards.
Following the theoretical session, the activity continued with a hands-on field exercise led by the UGM K5L Emergency Response Team: Gunawan Praptono, Choirul Anwar, Ngabdan Endra Saputra, and Masrukhan. During this session, participants had the opportunity to directly practice using fire extinguishers, ranging from techniques for aiming the nozzle and maintaining a safe distance to identifying the types of fires that can be handled by specific extinguishing agents. Participants were also given the chance to practice correct and safe fire-extinguishing techniques, thereby gaining practical experience that is crucial when facing emergency situations.
This training was attended by faculty members, educational support staff, students, cleaning service personnel, and security staff (SKKK). The participants’ enthusiasm was evident in their active engagement during both the theoretical and practical sessions, reflecting the entire academic community’s commitment to safety on campus. This activity provided essential knowledge on emergency management while instilling the awareness that fires are a preventable risk through preparedness and proper training.
This training program is not only part of efforts to improve safety literacy but also aligns with the Faculty of Law at UGM’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By strengthening emergency response capacity, this initiative contributes to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by fostering a safe and healthy campus environment, as well as SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by enhancing disaster preparedness within the educational community. Furthermore, this training supports SDG 13 (Climate Action) because fire risk management is part of mitigating the impacts of climate change on infrastructure and public spaces.
By holding this training, the UGM Faculty of Law reaffirms its commitment to fostering a campus culture that is safe, responsive, and safety-conscious, in accordance with UGM’s K5L standards. The Faculty hopes that participants will apply the knowledge they have gained so that they can take swift and appropriate action in emergency situations and contribute to creating a safer learning environment for everyone.
