FH UGM and Swinburne Law School Hold the “Indonesia Law, Governance and Culture Study Tour 2021”

On Tuesday, July 13, 2021, the Faculty of Law, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM) warmly welcomed the implementation of its collaboration with Swinburne Law School through the Indonesia Law, Governance and Culture Study Tour 2021. The welcoming session was conducted virtually via Zoom Meeting and attended by representatives of FH UGM, representatives of Swinburne Law School, and Drg. Laifa Hendarmin, Ph.D., who served as the Indonesian tour staff appointed by Swinburne Law School.

The event was officially opened by Prof. Dr. Sigit Riyanto, S.H., LL.M., Dean of FH UGM. In his remarks, he expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Swinburne Law School for once again selecting FH UGM as one of the destinations in its study tour program. He also emphasized the importance of strengthening academic cooperation between Indonesia and Australia.

Dr. Jeremy Kingsley, representing Swinburne Law School, also delivered welcoming remarks during the event. He highlighted the importance of Australian law students developing an understanding of Indonesian law so that they may gain insight into contemporary legal developments in Indonesia. The visit by Swinburne Law School to FH UGM is part of a long-standing collaboration that has been conducted regularly since 2019. This year, the study tour program was held from July 5 to July 16, 2021. One of the key activities in the program was a series of lectures on Indonesian law delivered by FH UGM faculty members to students of Swinburne Law School on Thursday, July 15, 2021. The first session was scheduled for 7:30 a.m. (WIB) and featured "Introduction to Indonesian Legal System" presented by Dr. Sri Wiyanti Eddyono, S.H., LL.M. (HR). The second session, held at 10:00 a.m. (WIB), focused on "Introduction to Indonesian Environmental Law" delivered by I Gusti Agung Made Wardana, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D. The final session, held at 12:30 p.m. (WIB), discussed "The New Indonesian Constitution and Human Rights Protection" presented by Dr. Mahaarum Kusuma Pertiwi, S.H., M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D.

As part of the broader study tour program, Swinburne Law School’s activities extended beyond FH UGM. Participants also visited several Indonesian legal and educational institutions, including the South Jakarta Religious Court, the Central Jakarta District Court, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia, the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM), Pabelan Islamic Boarding School, Yang & Co. Lawyers, and Assegaf Hamzah & Partners. Through this study tour, both institutions sought to foster greater cross-cultural understanding and academic exchange while providing students with valuable insights into Indonesia’s legal system, governance structures, and socio-legal developments.
