The UGM Faculty of Law, represented by Maytri Gestart Ignatius and Ganeshara Jilan Emeri, students of the UGM Faculty of Law, won second place in the Legal Opinion competition at the Fasih Law Fair 2025. This competition was organized by the Student Council of the Faculty of Sharia and Law at the State Islamic University of Tulungagung. The essay competition was held under the overarching theme “The Role of Law in Defining Crimes and Punishments.”
Kompetisi dilakukan dengan 2 babak yang berbeda, yaitu babak penyisihan dan babak final. Dalam babak penyisihan yang diselenggarakan secara daring, berkas yang masuk dari semua peserta akan diseleksi. Sehingga dari 25 peserta menghasilkan 3 peserta. Ketiga perserta ini dinyatakan sebagai finalis legal opinion yang merupakan babak final. Babak ini dilaksanakan secara luring pada Selasa (24/6/2025).
The Legal Opinion finals provide an opportunity for the finalists to present the legal opinions they have prepared before the three judges who also evaluated the submissions during the preliminary round. In this competition, the award categories consist of 1st Place, 2nd Place, and 3rd Place. Delegations that advance as finalists in the legal opinion competition are essentially already winners; however, their final rankings are determined based on the cumulative scores of their written submissions and presentations.
The announcement of the winners of the legal opinion competition was held in person at the Faculty of Sharia and Law Building of the State Islamic University Satu Tulungagung. During the announcement, Maytri Gestart Ignatius and Ganeshara Jilan Emeri were declared the 2nd place winners of the legal opinion competition. The presentation of plaques and trophies took place on Wednesday (June 25, 2025). Unfortunately, the UGM delegation was unable to attend the event due to preparations for the legislative drafting competition at the 2025 Sebelas Maret University Law Week.
This achievement also reflects the contribution of the Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, this initiative aligns with SDG 4 on Quality Education, which promotes the development of students’ intellectual capacity and skills through competitive activities based on research and legal argumentation. Furthermore, by enhancing legal literacy and student engagement in discussions surrounding the criminal justice system, this activity also contributes to SDG 16 on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, which emphasizes the importance of the rule of law, access to justice, and the role of the younger generation in inclusive and just legal reform.
In light of this achievement, the author would like to express gratitude to everyone who provided assistance throughout the competition series. Hopefully, other students at the UGM Faculty of Law will be motivated to think critically and practice improving their skills in writing legal opinions as future legal practitioners and scholars.
