Discussing the Use of GenAI as a Technological Innovation in the Legal Field, CTRL UGM and Hukumonline Hold a Limited Seminar

Center for Law, Technology, RegTech, and LegalTech Studies Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (CTRL UGM), in collaboration with Hukumonline, held a Research Dissemination and Limited Seminar entitled "Implementation of Generative Artificial Intelligence for Legal Research" at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University, on Friday (November 1, 2024).

During the limited seminar, speakers provided their responses and arguments regarding the implementation of GenAI in the legal field. The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Islamic University of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Budi Agus Riswandi, S.H., M.Hum., was one of the speakers at the event. 

He delivered a presentation on the topic of GenAI in the Legal Industry and Higher Education. In his presentation, Prof. Budi explained that GenAI, as a technological innovation, is crucial for the legal industry and higher education. 

"If used wisely, GenAI can be used to obtain legal references, produce legal contract documents quickly and efficiently, provide analysis of legal documents, adapt to educational curricula, and predict decisions. However, the use of GenAI must remain guided by ethics and proportionality," he explained.

The seminar session was continued by Randi Ikhlas Sardoni, S.H., M.Sc., CPLHI, ALMI, AIIS, Vice President I of the Indonesian Corporate Counsel Association, with a presentation on the topic of "The Development of GenAI Use for In-House Counsel in Indonesia." Randi emphasized that digital transformation is inevitable for legal and compliance, but digital transformation can also assist in legal work. 

"The use of GenAI can simplify various tasks, such as Agreement Drafting and determining standard clauses, allowing In-House Counsel to perform more specific tasks, such as determining business acumen , to optimize time," he said

The next speaker, Teguh Arifiyadi, S.H., M.H. as Head of the Legal Bureau of the Ministry of Communication and Digital of the Republic of Indonesia, presented a presentation on Artificial Intelligence from a Regulatory Perspective. In his presentation, he explained that there are various options for AI regulatory schemes in Indonesia, including heavy regulation, less regulation, sandbox regulation, principles and ethics, and combination model

"However, regarding AI regulation in Indonesia, we are still considering it, as establishing regulations is not necessarily the best option for the development of law and technology in Indonesia, as well as Indonesia's current situation as a consumer of AI," said Teguh.

This activity encouraged participants and the general public to understand several important aspects of AI technology regulation, such as the opportunities and possibilities for the legal field, its use by legal professions—such as advocates—and how government regulatory policies affect the use of GenAI. The discussions at this seminar are expected to provide new insights and knowledge regarding the development of GenAI's use in the legal field.
