Over a total of three days, from Wednesday (October 22, 2025) through Friday (October 24, 2025), the Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University (UGM), through the Center for Natural Resources Governance Studies (NRGS), in collaboration with PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk (PT PGN Tbk), successfully held a legal training program titled “Legal for Non-Legal” Batch 2. Held at the UGM Jakarta Master of Law Campus in South Jakarta, this training program is part of a partnership between the UGM Faculty of Law and PT PGN Tbk. This collaboration provides legal education and training—particularly in business law—to PT PGN Tbk management and its subsidiaries/affiliates with non-legal backgrounds, with the aim of supporting the company’s business activities while fostering individual professional development. This legal training program consists of 12 sessions, beginning at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m. WIB each day. The program features presenters from both academia and the legal profession—each according to their respective areas of expertise—as well as the legal team from PT PGN Tbk.
On the first day, Wednesday (October 22, 2025), the “Legal for Non-Legal” Batch 2 training began with an opening ceremony and introductory remarks by Prof. Dr. Mailinda Eka Yuniza, S.H., LL.M., representing the UGM Faculty of Law and NRGS. “This ‘Legal for Non-Legal’ training program is designed to equip participants—all of whom have non-legal backgrounds—with a better understanding of the legal context, business law, and corporate law. Of course, the knowledge gained can then be applied to support business activities in their respective companies,” said Prof. Mailinda. Following the opening session, the program continued with participants taking a pre-test before receiving the full legal training materials. This pre-test serves as a measure of participants’ understanding before and after the training, with a post-test to be administered at the end of the session.
The first session began with a presentation on “Corporate Law” by Prof. Dr. Sulistiowati, S.H., M.Hum, Professor of Business Law at the UGM Faculty of Law. The next session, also led by Prof. Sulistiowati, covered “Good Corporate Governance.” These first two sessions served as an introductory foundation for understanding the legal aspects of business and corporations, while also providing a basic framework for participants without a legal background. Moving on to the subsequent sessions, more specific legal topics were introduced to the participants. The third session was presented by Prof. Dr. Nindyo Pramono, S.H., M.S., Professor of Business Law at the UGM Faculty of Law, who covered the topic “Capital Markets Law.” Also led by Prof. Nindyo, the fourth session covered “Legal Due Diligence and Know Your Customer for Business Partners.” In addition to presenting the material according to the course outline, the first day of the training also included discussions of the material and relevant case studies between participants and the presenter throughout the training sessions.
On the second day, Thursday (October 23, 2025), the fifth training session began with a presentation on “Introduction to Legal Studies” delivered by Prof. Dr. Ari Hernawan, S.H., M.Hum., a Professor of Civil Law at the UGM Faculty of Law. Prof. Ari then continued with the next session, Session 6, by presenting the topic “Introduction to Indonesian Law,” which provided a general overview of legal concepts to help non-legal participants understand legal material. After the first six training sessions were led by academic instructors from the UGM Faculty of Law, the seventh session and subsequent sessions were conducted by legal practitioners. Eri Hertiawan, S.H., LL.M., MCIArb., Partner and Co-Head of the Dispute Resolution Practice Group at Assegaf Hamzah & Partners, was the first practitioner to lead this training. Eri presented material on “Legal Risk Management” during the seventh session and on “Legal Case Analysis, Audit, & Investigation” during the eighth session. Beyond covering theoretical concepts, each session led by the presenter also included discussions of legal case studies relevant to corporate business, fostering an interactive Q&A between participants and the presenter.
On the third and final day, Friday, October 24, 2025, the “Legal for Non-Legal” Training Program, Batch 2, began with the ninth session, led by A.M. Alfridijanta (New York attorney/UK solicitor), who serves as International Legal Consultant at PT PGN Tbk. Alfridijanta discussed the topic “U.S. & U.K. Business Laws (Common Law).” The 10th session continued with a presentation by Marie Siti Mariana Massie, Division Head of Legal Compliance & Governance at PT PGN Tbk, who covered “Affiliate Transactions, Material Transactions, Conflicts of Interest, and Disclosure of Information.” The following sessions—sessions 11 and 12—covered the handling of legal disputes, presented by Jou Samuel Hutajulu, S.H., M.H., Chairman of the Indonesian Energy Dispute Arbitration Board (BASE). Session 11 addressed “Resolving Energy Disputes through Litigation,” while Session 12 covered “Resolving Energy Disputes through Arbitration & APS” to provide participants with a deeper understanding of how to handle legal disputes related to corporate business, particularly for companies in the energy sector.
Of course, the sessions on this final day also focused extensively on relevant real-world cases as a way to apply theory in practice. In response to the conclusion of the “Legal for Non-Legal” Batch 2 training, one participant expressed appreciation for the quality of the program’s execution. “This training was very enlightening; the materials and the instructors were highly knowledgeable in the legal field. This event was very helpful in expanding our knowledge and awareness of legal matters,” said one of the participants.
The implementation of the “Legal for Non-Legal” Batch 2 training program aligns with the commitment of the Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) and PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk (PGN) to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. Through this program, the UGM Faculty of Law and PGN aim to enhance the capacity of non-legal professionals to comprehensively understand the legal aspects of business, thereby promoting transparent, accountable, and ethical business practices. In addition to strengthening legal literacy in the energy sector, this training also serves as a tangible manifestation of the synergy between academia and industry in strengthening sustainable and equitable corporate governance that supports inclusive economic development and global competitiveness.
