DEMA Justicia FH UGM Holds "Justicia Berbagi #1" to Embody Social Concern for the Homeless

Justicia Berbagi #1 is a social initiative from DEMA Justicia that aims to take small steps toward significant change. Held on Friday (March 14, 2025), this program focused on helping marginalized groups, particularly the homeless, around Universitas Gadjah Mada. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, their presence is often overlooked. Through this activity, DEMA Justicia strives to demonstrate real concern for fellow human beings who are often marginalized from public attention.

Justicia Berbagi is more than just an act of charity; it is more than that. It reflects the values of humanity, solidarity, and social justice, which are fundamental to legal thought itself. Through fundraising, which raised Rp1,007,000, DEMA Justicia was able to distribute 75 lunch boxes as a form of care for the homeless people encountered on various streets. Each package distributed is not just food, but also a token of care—a reminder that they are not forgotten. During the distribution process, this activity is not only a moment of giving, but also a means of profound learning: learning to listen, understand, and remember that the right to a decent life is the right of every human being, regardless of social status.

The Justicia Berbagi #1 program also aligns with the efforts of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM) in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through food distribution to marginalized groups, this activity supports SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by ensuring access to food for the often-overlooked homeless. This act of caring also supports SDG 3 (Healthy and Prosperous Lives), as adequate food is a fundamental human right. Furthermore, student involvement in this program reinforces the values of social justice and inclusion, which align with SDG 10 (Reduced Inequality). With a spirit of togetherness, Justicia Berbagi also represents a tangible contribution to SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), as it prioritizes solidarity and caring in building a more just and inclusive society.

More than just a one-day activity, Justicia Sharing #1 marked the beginning of a series of commitments from DEMA Justicia to continue being present in the community by bringing the spirit of sharing and caring in every step. DEMA Justicia believes that change does not always have to start from big policies or monumental actions. Sometimes, change begins with a packet of warm rice shared with a sincere smile amidst the hustle and bustle of Yogyakarta. Through this activity, DEMA Justicia not only carries out its social role as part of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, but also revives the meaning of social justice in a real way. Hopefully, this small movement can be a spark for the next steps of care that are broader and more sustainable.
