Faculty of Law UGM Held A Guest Lecture and Invited Legal Professor from Kyoto University, Japan

Faculty of Law UGM held a guest lecture which invited the speaker and reputable expert in the field of competition law, Prof. Masako Wakui from Master of Law School, Kyoto University. This Guest Lecture that raised the topic of “Competition Policy in Japan and the Contemporary Issues” was conducted in Room 3.1.1 of Faculty of Law UGM, on Monday (5/5/2025).

This initiative was reflecting the sustainable dedication of Faculty of Law UGM that provides a relevant legal education that is global and to build an international partnership that is valuable and contributes to the development and the academic innovation.

This guest lecture was attended by the participants from IUP Program and the LLM Program. This event was aligned with the commitment from FH UGM in creating an opportunity for the students to enhance their knowledge regarding the legal issues through an international collaboration and the initiative for a transfer of knowledge. 

One of these is competition law, a key area in regulating global economic activity. Competition law plays a crucial role in maintaining fair market conditions, protecting consumers, and promoting sustainable economic development. 

The presence of Prof. Masako Wakui gave a comparative perspective on how Japan is navigating the contemporary competition legal issues. In this lecture, Prof. Masako Wakui explained regarding the competition policy perspective that developed in Japan in responding to the modern challenges.

This lecture was expected to enhance the students’ knowledge regarding the regulation and the practice of global competition, broaden their knowledge regarding the law and the practice of competition in other countries, especially in Japan. It was also hoped that this lecture could deepen the students’ knowledge regarding the aspect of comparison of law and the practice between Indonesia and other countries, especially Japan. Additionally, it strengthens international networks and promotes cross-border academic dialogue in legal education.

This guest lecture series also contributes to the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by providing access to global perspectives and cutting-edge knowledge in the field of competition law. By inviting international experts and facilitating cross-national dialogue, the Faculty of Law at UGM promotes intercultural learning and strengthens students’ academic capabilities.

On the other hand, this lecture also supports SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, as sound competition law is a vital foundation for fair markets, consumer protection, and sustainable economic growth. By enriching students’ understanding of international competition law, FH UGM reinforces the role of higher education in producing graduates capable of contributing to inclusive and equitable economic governance at the global level.
