The Center for Intellectual Property Competition and Dispute Settlement Mechanism Studies (CIDODS) held a legal counseling session in Canden Village, Jetis Subdistrict, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region, on Monday (September 30, 2024). The counseling session, which covered the topic of Intellectual Property Rights, was attended by village officials, representatives of BUMkal (Village-Owned Enterprises), representatives of MSMEs, and the Canden Village community.
The event began with remarks from AKBP (Ret.) Beja, S.H., M.H., as the Head of Canden. It was followed by introductory remarks from Herliana S.H., M.CommLaw., Ph.D., the Chair of CICODS. During the main event, a presentation on intellectual property rights was delivered by Royhan Akbar, S.H., LL.M., and Laurensia Andrini, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D., covering the types of intellectual property rights protection and the benefits of intellectual property rights protection for the community. The event continued with a discussion session with the community regarding the challenges encountered in protecting their intellectual property.
One interesting question was raised by an MSME entrepreneur whose kitchen spice brand was copied by a close neighbor. The discussion continued with a discussion on the potential for creating a trademark for the regional drinking water business owned by the Canden Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMKal). At the end of the discussion, the instructor emphasized that intellectual property rights disputes at the village level can be resolved through mediation first, especially since Canden Village already has a Mediation House that can assist residents in resolving disputes. The Canden Village Head concluded the event with a group photo.
