Lintang Atha Zahfirah, a 2021 student at the UGM Faculty of Law, and her team held a legal outreach event titled “The Urgency of Intellectual Property Rights Registration for Pottery MSMEs in the Kasongan Tourism Village, Bantul.” The event took place on Saturday, September 9, 2023, in Padukuhan Kajen, Kasongan, Bantul.
The workshop covered the definition of intellectual property rights (IPR), types of IPR, case studies relevant to pottery SMEs, and practical steps for registering IPR. Lintang Atha Zahfirah and her team provided an in-depth understanding of the need to protect the intellectual works of SME practitioners, particularly in the pottery sector—a distinctive cultural asset of Kasongan Tourism Village.
The event began with opening remarks, followed by a presentation delivered in language easily understood by the general public. Participants actively engaged in the Q&A session, demonstrating high interest and enthusiasm for intellectual property rights protection.
As an additional interactive activity, a door prize drawing was held to surprise lucky participants. This not only added to the event’s excitement but also increased participants’ engagement with the material presented.
In addition to providing the public with a better understanding of the law, this activity also contributes to the implementation of the goals of quality education and partnerships, in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 and 17. This activity is part of the 2023 Student Legal Outreach Grant program initiated by the UGM Faculty of Law.
Kasongan Tourism Village, particularly the Kajen hamlet—the venue for this activity—is expected to further raise awareness of the urgency of registering intellectual property rights among pottery MSME operators. Consequently, creativity and innovation in pottery production can be better protected under the law.
This event has a positive impact not only on pottery SMEs in Kasongan Tourism Village but also serves as an inspiring example for SMEs in other regions. It is hoped that, through IPR protection efforts, the works and products of SMEs can grow and develop safely, providing sustainable economic benefits for the local community.
