An FH UGM alumnus has once again achieved a source of pride within the Government of the Republic of Indonesia. This time, the news comes from Laurentius Amrih Jinangkung, S.H., LL.M., who was recently inaugurated as Director General of Legal Affairs and International Treaties at Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He graduated from FH UGM in the Class of 1986 before going on to earn a master's degree at Cornell Law School in the United States. Describing himself as an "International Law Enthusiast," Jinangkung began his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1993, and his career progressed rapidly from there.
From 2000–2003, he served as Second Secretary at the Indonesian Embassy in Washington, D.C. He then returned to Indonesia to head the Department of Law and Maritime Boundaries until 2006, before being posted to the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague as Political Counselor until 2010. He was then recalled to Indonesia to serve as Deputy Director of Law and Economic Treaties until 2017.
In 2020, President Joko Widodo included Laurentius Amrih Jinangkung's name among 31 candidates for Indonesian Ambassador positions. Hailing from Kulon Progo, he went on to serve as Indonesia's Ambassador to the Holy See (Vatican) — news that was a great source of pride for the FH UGM community at the time. He was also introduced to over 450 new FH UGM students during the "Inspiring Alumni" Talkshow at PPSMB Demokrasi FH 2020, alongside Prof. Dr. Enny Nurbaningsih, S.H., M.Hum., a Justice of the Constitutional Court.
He was ultimately inaugurated as Director General of Legal Affairs and International Treaties at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, April 27, 2022, succeeding Damos Dumoli Agusman, who now serves as Indonesia's Ambassador to Austria. The inauguration was carried out by Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi at Gedung Pancasila, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, alongside the inauguration of two other Senior High Leadership officials at the Ministry. Best wishes to Mr. Amrih in his new role — may he continue to serve as a source of motivation and inspiration for the FH UGM community.
