A delegation from the Speech and Law Debate Society (SPECIALITY) at the UGM Faculty of Law has claimed Second Place in the National Law Debate category at the Marvelaw UNNES Competition 2023, held on Monday, November 6, 2023. The SPECIALITY delegation comprised Rahmah Salsabilla (2022), Afanin Fariq Fajriya (2023), and Septi Widiya (2022) as delegation leader. The three were assisted by Yasmin Widya Akmala (2023) as official.
This law debate competition was organized by the Student Executive Board of Universitas Negeri Semarang. The theme of the law debate matched the overarching theme of the Marvelaw UNNES Competition 2023: "The Progressiveness of Law in National Development in the Era of 5.0." A total of 8 Faculties of Law from various universities sent delegations to compete.
The law debate competition opened with a preliminary round. In this round, competing teams were divided into 4 chambers, with each chamber comprising 2 teams. From the preliminary round, the team with the highest victory points in each chamber advanced, leaving 4 teams to compete in the semi-final round. In the semi-final round, 2 chambers competed until the 2 best teams remained to advance to the final.
The two best teams that advanced to the final were from Universitas Gadjah Mada and Universitas Diponegoro. The final round was attended in person by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Negeri Semarang. The motion debated in the final round was "Direct Bankruptcy Proceedings Against State-Owned Enterprises," with the SPECIALITY FH UGM delegation arguing the pro position. The SPECIALITY UGM delegation secured second place, earning 1 highest victory point from a total of 5 judges.
In light of this achievement, the SPECIALITY UGM delegation extends its gratitude to all those who provided assistance throughout the competition series. With this result, it is hoped that other UGM Faculty of Law students will be inspired to sharpen their critical thinking and public speaking skills, and to achieve success at both the national and international level.
