FH UGM AND LPKA YOGYAKARTA ADVOCATE FOR SOCIAL REINTEGRATION OF CHILDREN IN CONFLICT WITH THE LAW THROUGH PUBLIC BROADCAST

Yogyakarta, January 21, 2026 – The Faculty of Law at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM), through its Legal Consultation and Aid Center (PKBH), collaborated with the Class II Juvenile Special Guidance Institute (LPKA) Yogyakarta and Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) Pro 2 Yogyakarta to successfully host a legal counseling broadcast. Titled "Santai Siang: Towards a New Beginning: Human Rights of Children in Conflict with the Law in the Reintegration Process," the program aimed to educate the public on the critical need to support Children in Conflict with the Law (ABH) as they transition from rehabilitation facilities back into society. This initiative represents a concrete step by PKBH FH UGM to protect human rights, specifically those of vulnerable youth, ensuring their rehabilitation and social reintegration processes are successful.

The broadcast featured expert insights from Prof. Dr. Heribertus Jaka Triyana, S.H., LL.M., M.A., Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, and Information Systems at FH UGM, and Supar, A.Md.IP., S.Sos., M.H., Head of LPKA Class II Yogyakarta. The discussion highlighted that the fulfillment of child rights does not end when the guidance period at LPKA concludes; rather, it enters a critical phase as they return to their social environments.

Both speakers emphasized that LPKA must not be viewed as a repressive prison, but as a space for recovery and restoration. The discussion further underscored that public legal education is a meaningful step toward ensuring ABH are granted equal space and opportunity within the community. The speakers called on the public to play an active role by opening simple yet vital avenues for integration in daily life. Through these collective efforts, the indicators of successful reintegration can be fully achieved—most notably, preventing recidivism (re-offending). This approach ensures the effective implementation of the mandates within Government Regulation (PP) Number 78 of 2021 and the Penitentiary Law regarding social reintegration.

This legal counseling program is a tangible manifestation of community service that supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It directly contributes to Goal 4 (Quality Education) by enhancing public legal literacy; Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by promoting peace, justice, and inclusive institutions; and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), reflecting the strategic partnerships built to achieve sustainable development.
