The Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University (FH UGM) held a Waste Management Workshop attended by educational staff, students, and cleaning service personnel on Friday (November 14, 2025). This event aimed to improve environmental literacy and encourage the adoption of more responsible waste management practices, both on campus and in participants’ own households. The workshop featured Pipit Noviyani, S.Si, from UGM’s Center for Agrotechnology Innovation (PIAT), which is known as the unit responsible for developing innovations in waste processing and environmental management at UGM.
The workshop focused on various household waste treatment methods that are easy for the public to implement. Participants were introduced to aerobic fermentation techniques, such as making eco-enzymes and compost, which can transform organic waste into environmentally friendly products. Additionally, anaerobic fermentation methods were explained, including the production of decomposers and liquid organic fertilizer (POC), which can be used to enrich soil for plants. Participants also gained an understanding of the bioconversion process using Black Soldier Flies (BSF)—a technique for processing organic waste using black soldier fly larvae so that the waste decomposes more quickly and produces useful byproducts, such as livestock feed and high-quality compost.
Through these practical and hands-on activities, the UGM Faculty of Law encourages the academic community not only to understand environmental issues from a theoretical perspective but also to apply that understanding in their daily lives. The collaboration between faculty and staff, students, and the cleaning service demonstrates that efforts to protect the environment are a shared responsibility—one that can begin with small steps, such as waste management within the faculty.
The organization of this workshop aligns with the Faculty of Law at UGM’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through education and the practice of faculty waste management, the faculty helps strengthen the implementation of SDG 12, which aims to promote responsible consumption and production patterns by reducing waste generation and reusing organic waste. At the same time, this activity also supports SDG 11 by improving the quality of the campus environment as part of a clean, healthy, and sustainable community.
Through this workshop, the UGM Faculty of Law reaffirms its commitment to fostering a culture of environmental stewardship across all segments of the academic community. It is hoped that the knowledge and skills gained will be consistently applied, so that the small efforts made by each individual can bring about significant change for the environmental sustainability of the campus and the broader community.
