Dr. Muhammad Fatahillah Akbar, S.H., LL.M., a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (FH UGM), was selected to teach in the Short Training Course on the Substance and New Provisions of National Criminal Law (Law No. 1 of 2023), which is intended for first-instance and appellate judges throughout Indonesia. This program was organized by the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia via a self-paced e-learning platform from Monday (September 22, 2025) through Wednesday (September 23, 2025), followed by Zoom Meeting sessions from Wednesday (September 24, 2025) through Friday (September 26, 2025).
During Class B on Wednesday (September 24), Dr. Akbar presented a lecture on “Innovations and Principles of Criminal Law in the 2023 Criminal Code.” He emphasized that the new Criminal Code marks a significant milestone in the reform of national criminal law, while also requiring judges to exercise critical understanding to ensure that their rulings uphold justice and human rights. Drawing on his academic and research experience, Dr. Akbar provided an in-depth analysis that strengthens judges’ capacity to apply the principles of modern criminal law.
The Faculty of Law at UGM’s involvement through Dr. Akbar aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). First, SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), as this training directly contributes to strengthening a transparent, accountable, and inclusive judicial system. Second, SDG 4 (Quality Education), by facilitating the transfer of academic knowledge to strengthen judges’ capacity as law enforcers. Third, SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), through efforts to achieve equal legal protection for all citizens. With this active role, the UGM Faculty of Law reaffirms its position as an academic center that supports national legal reform to achieve sustainable justice.
