UGM Professor Discusses Legal Ethics in Combating Online Gambling at Muhammadiyah University

Dr. Muhammad Fatahillah Akbar, S.H., LL.M., a lecturer in Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University, served as a speaker in a webinar titled “Building Community Resilience through Digital Literacy, Legal Ethics, and Islamic Finance to Combat Online Gambling”. This webinar was organized by Muhammadiyah Cyber University on Saturday (June 28, 2025). The event was attended by participants from various backgrounds and was held online via Zoom Meeting.

In his presentation, Dr. Akbar emphasized the importance of legal literacy in the digital age to encourage responsible behavior and prevent the negative impacts of online activities, particularly online gambling. He noted that an understanding of legal norms can strengthen society’s resilience against digital threats.

This webinar also featured other speakers, including Hendri Kurniawan, S.Kom., M.Cs., who discussed the technological aspects of combating online gambling; Dr. dr. H. Kusbayanto, M.Kes., who addressed the psychological impact of gambling on health; and Rosid Wahyu Nugroho, who highlighted the role of Islamic finance in fostering a healthy and ethical financial culture.

This initiative reflects cross-sectoral collaboration in addressing contemporary social challenges through a multidisciplinary approach. This interdisciplinary discussion reinforces the understanding that digital literacy, legal ethics, and Islamic finance must go hand in hand as the foundation of a resilient society.

Specifically, this initiative contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) through the enhancement of legal and digital literacy, Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) through the promotion of legal ethics and digital justice, as well as Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by integrating collaboration among academics, practitioners, and financial institutions. This webinar is a concrete step toward a safer, more legally aware, and empowered society in facing the dynamics of the digital age.
