The Faculty of Law at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), through its Legal Aid Consultation Center (PKBH), visited Sleman Class IIB Correctional Facility (Lapas Sleman) on Tuesday (24/9/2024).
The visit was conducted to discuss the signing of a cooperation agreement regarding the provision of free legal assistance services for inmates at Lapas Sleman.
This initiative also served as a means to enhance UGM Faculty of Law’s community service performance through PKBH by renewing the cooperation agreement with Lapas Sleman. Previously, the collaboration was limited to legal counseling services only.
The new cooperation agreement includes a broader scope, focusing on the provision of free legal assistance services by PKBH to inmates at Lapas Sleman.
This initiative aligns with the 16th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), promoting peace, justice, and inclusive institutions, and the 17th SDG, which emphasizes building partnerships to achieve tangible and impactful outcomes.
During the visit, PKBH was represented by Dr. Sartika Intaning Pradhani, S.H., M.H., Deputy Secretary II of PKBH, along with several PKBH part-timers. They were warmly welcomed by Kelik Sulistyanto, Amd.IP., S.H., M.H., Head of Lapas Sleman, and his team, who also received an invitation for the signing of the cooperation agreement.
Both parties engaged in discussions, exchanging ideas regarding the cooperation agreement, which is scheduled to be signed on October 2, 2024. The Head of Lapas Sleman, Kelik, proposed expanding the agreement’s scope to include research and internships for students.
Lapas Sleman expressed its openness to welcoming students for research and internships, a proposal that was positively received by PKBH and will be included in the agreement’s scope.
This activity marks a significant step for PKBH in enhancing its services, particularly in providing free legal assistance, both through non-litigation services such as legal consultations and counseling, as well as litigation services through legal representation.
The collaborative synergy between the two institutions will continue to be strengthened to better implement the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, specifically through improved community service, which will ultimately result in better legal services for the public.
