Faculty Of Law Universitas Gadjah Mada Conducts Legal Counseling For Inmates At Class IIB Sleman Correctional Facility

On Friday, February 20, 2026, the Faculty of Law, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM), through its Legal Consultation and Aid Center (PKBH), successfully conducted its inaugural legal counseling program for 2026 at the Class IIB Sleman Correctional Facility (Lapas). This legal counseling initiative serves as a concrete step taken by PKBH FH UGM to implement community service, thereby fulfilling the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education). This multi-helix activity involved various elements of the academic community, ranging from lecturers to university students.

The legal counseling commenced at 09:00 WIB in the Main Hall of the Class IIB Sleman Correctional Facility. The event featured two faculty members who presented on distinct topics. Sri Wiyanti Eddyono, S.H., LL.M.(HR), Ph.D., delivered a presentation titled "Rights of Detainees and Inmates in Correctional Facilities," while Dr. R.A. Antari Innaka Turingsih, S.H., M.Hum., discussed the theme of "Civil Law." Both speakers delivered their material in a highly communicative manner.

The counseling session was also attended by Khosim Nur Zaman, S.Tr.Pas., the Head of the Registration and Community Guidance Sub-Section of the Class IIB Sleman Correctional Facility. Mr. Khosim emphasized that the safeguarding of inmates' rights has been actively implemented at the facility, citing the provision of educational books as a concrete example of guaranteeing the right to education. The participants demonstrated great enthusiasm for both topics and engaged actively in discussion sessions with the speakers. The implementation of this legal counseling is expected to serve as a medium to increase awareness of inmates' rights and act as an effort to strengthen an inclusive and peaceful society.

This legal counseling activity at the Class IIB Sleman Correctional Facility aligns with the spirit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 regarding Quality Education. The program resonates with this goal by providing informal education to broaden access to inclusive, equitable, and quality education, specifically concerning inmates' rights within the facility and the scope of civil law. Additionally, the initiative is expected to support SDG Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. It does so by seeking to elevate the legal awareness of inmates to foster a peaceful society, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels, thereby strengthening a fair legal system. Furthermore, this legal counseling is a form of support for SDG Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals, demonstrated through sustainable, inter-institutional collaboration.
