A study on zakat management in Malang has led Nur Fadhilah, S.H.I., M.Hum., to earn her doctoral degree from the Faculty of Law, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), on Saturday (22\/10). The Malang-born scholar successfully defended her dissertation, entitled \u201cZakat Management Based on the Principle of Justice (A Case Study of Zakat Management in Malang, East Java).\u201d The study was motivated by several factors, including Malang\u2019s history of implementing zakat management innovations, the establishment of a synergy forum among zakat management organizations in Greater Malang, and the presence of several Zakat Amil Institutions (LAZ) in the city.<\/p>\n

The open doctoral examination was chaired by Prof. Dr. Sigit Riyanto, S.H., LL.M. Prof. Dr. Abdul Ghofur Anshori, S.H., M.H. served as the promotor, with Prof. Dr. Nurhasan Ismail, S.H., M.Si. as co-promotor. The examination also involved an external examiner from the Faculty of Law, UGM, Prof. Dr. Kaelan, M.S., from the Faculty of Philosophy, UGM.<\/p>\n

Empirically, the existence of injustice in zakat distribution was one of the reasons Nur Fadhilah chose zakat as the focus of her dissertation. She argued that such injustice was caused by several factors, including the failure to ensure that zakat reached its intended beneficiaries and achieved its intended objectives. Injustice can also be identified from a normative perspective, particularly in existing legislation governing zakat management by Zakat Amil Institutions (LAZ), individual zakat administrators, and associations of individuals.<\/p>\n

In her dissertation, Nur Fadhilah concluded that a normative concept of zakat management based on justice must meet two criteria. First, both institutions and individuals must be given the opportunity to manage zakat. Second, the requirements for fair treatment must be fulfilled, including eligibility, freedom, and equality of status.<\/p>\n

In closing, the IAIN Tulungagung lecturer recommended greater coordination among zakat management institutions in Malang, as well as improving the quality of zakat administrators through professional training.<\/p>\n

After a break of approximately 10 minutes, the examination committee announced the results of the open examination, declaring Nur Fadhilah, S.H.I., M.Hum., to have passed with very satisfactory honors. The result also made her the 143rd doctoral graduate of the Faculty of Law, UGM. \u201cAs a scholar of Islamic law, I hope you will work with heart and soul, and help address the challenges before us by transforming Islam into a vision for a new world civilization for humanity,\u201d said Abdul Ghofur at the end of the examination.
