This was demonstrated by five students from the Faculty of Law, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM), who won the Spirit of the Moot Award in their first participation in the International Alternative Dispute Resolution Mooting Competition (IADRMC) Hong Kong 2016.

The five students were Agathon Henryanto (2015), Yohanes Djingga (2015), and Kimp Y.D. Hermawan (2014), who served as oralists; Erika Wijaya (2014) as the mediator; and Wika Tanggwa (2015) as the team manager.
The IADRMC 2016 was held at City University of Hong Kong from July 5–9, 2016. The competition was initiated in 2010 by the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) and the School of Law, City University of Hong Kong (CityU), in cooperation with the UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RCAP) and Curtin Law School.

Agathon, who served as the delegation leader, said that the 2016 competition was attended by 17 law schools from various countries, including Australia, the Czech Republic, China, India, and Russia. According to him, the competition was unique because it developed not only students' skills in arbitration but also their abilities in mediation. As a result, the preparation required was different from that for other moot court competitions.

At IADRMC 2016, two Australian universities, Monash University and Murdoch University, advanced to the final round, which was ultimately won by Monash University. The competition also presented individual awards, including Best Mediator, Best Individual in the Client’s Role, and Best Oralist.

“Although our team was not accompanied by our coach, M. Rifky Wicaksono, a lecturer at FH UGM, we tried our best not to disappoint him and to deliver our best performance,” said Wika, the team manager, on Tuesday (20/9). In addition to support from their coach, the team also received full support from FH UGM for UGM’s first participation in the competition.

Although the UGM team did not yet achieve the highest honor of becoming the overall champion, the achievement was remarkable, particularly considering that this was their first participation in the competition.
“Our next plan is to share the knowledge we gained with the team that will represent UGM next year and prepare more thoroughly for the competition,” Wika concluded, expressing hope that UGM would become the champion next year.
