Delegates from these universities attended the Legal Discussion on Branchless Banking organized by the Business Law Community (BLC) of FH UGM on Saturday (16/4).

Branchless Banking is a banking program whose services are not centered on branch offices, but instead can be conducted through certain agents appointed by a bank. Through this new program, BLC FH UGM sought to provide insights into Branchless Banking from legal perspectives as well as its objectives and benefits. In addition, the discussion also addressed the implementation of the program within the Indonesian economy.

This national event featured two speakers: Inda Rahadiyan, a lecturer and researcher at the Faculty of Law of Universitas Islam Indonesia, and Lay Monica Ratna Dewi, who was the Outstanding Student of the Faculty of Economics and Business UGM in 2011 and a research assistant on “ASEAN Insurance Market” and “ASEAN Capital Market.”

Monica stated, “Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of bank users in Indonesia is still low. Therefore, we hope that the flexible nature of Branchless Banking can encourage people to save and borrow money from banks rather than from loan sharks.” Meanwhile, Inda discussed Branchless Banking from a legal perspective. She explained that supervision over the implementation of the program lies with each respective bank, although the Financial Services Authority (OJK) also indirectly supervises these activities.

Karina Maharani, the chairperson of the event, stated that she and the committee were very impressed by the enthusiasm shown by delegates from various universities during the Legal Discussion. “We hope that legal discussion events involving BLCs from various universities, initiated by BLC UGM, can continue in the future and become a platform for law students to broaden their knowledge in the field of business law,” said the 2014 student.
