This strategic step was communicated directly to active students during the Socialization on Dissertation Writing Guidelines on Friday (4/9/2026), held in Room B.5.3, Building B, 5th Floor, FH UGM. The meeting, which ran from 09.00 to 11.00 WIB, brought together program administrators and dozens of students from the 2020 to 2026 cohorts to build a shared understanding of the applicable final-project regulations.

The socialization was held as an operational follow-up to the enactment of new guidelines dated 18 August 2026. Under the leadership of the Head of the PDIH FH UGM Program, Prof. M. Hawin, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D., these regulations are designed to ensure academic certainty for students covered by the 2015 Curriculum, the 2022 Curriculum, and the 2026 Curriculum. The updated guidelines affirm that writing a dissertation is not merely a matter of fulfilling an administrative requirement for graduation, but a demonstration of critical thinking in presenting legal novelty. Students are directed to examine the legal gap between the ideal norm (das sollen) and the reality of its application (das sein), whether by reinforcing or critically testing existing legal doctrines, principles, and theories.

One important aspect emphasized during the socialization was the rules of the game for using AI in preparing final projects. PDIH FH UGM has drawn a firm line between the "manual" domain and "limited AI" in order to safeguard academic integrity. Substantive processes such as drafting the background, formulating the research problem, analyzing research data, developing arguments for the discussion, drawing conclusions and recommendations, preparing the abstract, and paraphrasing must be carried out manually by students without AI involvement. AI use is permitted only in a limited capacity for supporting technical aspects, such as proofreading, initial assistance in searching for references, translating abstracts, creating visual charts, and organizing indexes and glossaries.

All use of AI must also be disclosed openly through a declaration sheet and footnotes in the manuscript. Beyond technological limits, the socialization walked participants through the technical flow of manuscript writing, which is divided into four document phases: the Dissertation Research Proposal, the Research Results Manuscript, the Preliminary Manuscript, and the final Dissertation manuscript, weighing 200–400 pages or 50,000–100,000 words. Students were also equipped with standard technical writing instructions, ranging from footnote citation conventions following the Ibid., Op.cit., and Loc.cit. rules, to the division of page numbering formats using lowercase Roman numerals and Arabic numerals, as well as the requirement to include supplementary instruments such as a Glossary Index, Subject Index, and Glossary in the final manuscript. This systematic order is intended to ensure that the research ideas raised can be presented coherently, systematically, and in a manner that is easy to examine scientifically.

The implementation of these writing guidelines reflects FH UGM's commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Strengthening academic standards contributes directly to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing a system of mentoring and evaluation for high-quality scholarly work. The commitment to upholding ethics and scholarly honesty in legal research is also in line with SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), in order to produce legal scholars of integrity who are ready to strengthen the pillars of national legal institutions. In addition, the interactive discussion space between program administrators and students across generations reflects the spirit of SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) for the advancement of the climate of legal higher education in Indonesia.

Through this socialization, PDIH FH UGM is optimistic that all doctoral students will have clear and measurable guidance in completing their studies on time. The existence of guidelines that are adaptive while still adhering to scholarly ethics is expected to maintain the quality of UGM law doctoral graduates so that they remain excellent, critical, and impactful for the wider community.

Author : Wisnu Arya Audanta (Part-Time Staff, Doctoral Program in Law)

Perkembangan teknologi kecerdasan buatan (Artificial Intelligence/AI) serta kebutuhan standardisasi mutu riset hukum mendorong Program Studi Doktor Ilmu Hukum Fakultas Hukum Universitas Gadjah Mada (PDIH FH UGM) memperbarui tata cara penulisan karya ilmiahnya.
