Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges of our time one that delivers impacts not only on environmental sustainability, but also on the health and well-being of communities. Rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, and increasingly intense extreme weather events all carry the potential to heighten a wide range of public health risks.<\/p>\n
The Faculty of Law at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM) takes seriously the interrelationship between climate change, public health, and sustainable development. A thorough understanding of the health impacts of climate change is essential in fostering the kind of awareness and evidence-based policies needed to protect both people and the environment on a lasting basis.<\/p>\n
Changes in climate conditions can heighten the risk of various diseases. Rising temperatures and increased rainfall, for example, can accelerate the transmission of vector-borne diseases such as dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF), chikungunya, and malaria. Floods and extreme weather events, meanwhile, can contaminate water sources and raise the risk of gastrointestinal infections.<\/p>\n
Declining air quality as a result of environmental change can also worsen a wide range of health conditions in particular, respiratory diseases. These include heightened risks of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and respiratory tract infections. The health impacts of climate change are further compounded by increased exposure to pollution and deteriorating environmental conditions.<\/p>\n
Climate change also exerts pressure on food security. Droughts and extreme weather can reduce agricultural yields, increase pest infestations, and affect the nutritional quality of food. Over the longer term, these conditions can increase food vulnerability and have implications for community nutrition.<\/p>\n
Beyond physical health, climate change has consequences for mental health as well. Natural disasters, environmental degradation, and threats to the continuity of livelihoods and ways of life can trigger psychological distress including stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma.<\/p>\n
As a higher education institution, FH UGM has a strategic role to play in deepening understanding of issues connected to sustainable development. A legal perspective is essential in responding to climate change particularly in ensuring just environmental governance and delivering protection for the rights and health of communities.<\/p>\n
These efforts are in line with the commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). The improvement of public literacy and understanding of climate change also supports SDG 4 (Quality Education).<\/p>\n
Through the strengthening of education and a perspective grounded in sustainable development, FH UGM is committed to contributing to the building of awareness of the critical importance of the integration between environmental protection, public health, and sustainable governance.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
