The faculty was represented by the Alternative Dispute Resolution Enhancement Society (ATHENS). The competition is part of an international legal negotiation event that brings together the best law students from across Indonesia to test their professional negotiation strategies and skills. Organized at Universitas Diponegoro, the competition serves as the gateway to the international round to be held in Canada. For the FH UGM delegation, the achievement of Runner-Up at the INC 2026 National Rounds is more than a title - it is the culmination of a long process defined by hard work, adaptability, and mutual trust.

Preparation began long before the competition itself. The team divided roles strategically: one serving as lead negotiator, focused on delivering persuasive arguments, and the other as strategist, ensuring that the direction of the negotiation remained tactical and client-oriented. A range of practice sessions were undertaken -- from role plays involving complex negotiation scenarios to time-pressure simulations demanding fast but rational decision-making. These practice sessions were frequently marked by critical evaluations and in-depth discussions that ultimately strengthened the team's synergy.

The preliminary rounds posed their own challenges. The delegation faced a diverse range of realistic case scenarios, requiring the ability to identify the interests of the parties, formulate negotiation strategies, and maintain a balance between legal interests and a collaborative approach. Each round brought fresh dynamics - from highly aggressive to deeply diplomatic opponents - compelling the team to constantly adapt their communication style, persuasion techniques, and conflict management approach.

As the competition advanced to the final rounds in Semarang, the atmosphere became intensely competitive. Every team demonstrated high-quality negotiation skills, making each session a genuine contest of strategy. In several rounds, the delegation had to think quickly - adjusting their approach, managing deadlock, and preserving a constructive relationship with the opposing party in pursuit of a mutually beneficial solution. The experience reinforced the insight that negotiation is not simply about winning a position, but about building understanding that endures.

When the winners were announced and the name of the FH UGM delegation was called as Runner-Up, the feeling was one of pride and deep emotion in equal measure. The result proved that every step of the journey - from preparation through each round of the competition - had been worthwhile. Beyond the competition itself, the INC 2026 National Round offered a profound understanding of international legal negotiation practice. Success in negotiation is determined not only by the strength of one's arguments, but also by the ability to listen actively, understand the interests of the other party, and maintain professionalism and ethical standards throughout.

The experience also broadened the delegation's network - connecting them with students, academics, and legal practitioners from institutions across Indonesia. This is valuable preparation for students as future legal practitioners facing an increasingly complex global landscape. Going forward, this achievement is hoped to serve as motivation to continue developing negotiation skills and to carry Indonesia's name further on the international stage.

This achievement aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), through the strengthening of students' negotiation, communication, and practice-based problem-solving capacities; SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), by instilling the importance of peaceful, professional, and just dispute resolution; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), through cross-institutional collaboration among students, academics, and legal practitioners.

Author: Nindita Putri N.
