Held at the Auditorium of Building B, FH UGM, Yogyakarta, the event served as a space for critical academic reflection on the political and legal dynamics unfolding amid the climate crisis and agrarian conflict in Indonesia.

The seminar drew attention to Indonesia's position at a critical crossroads — caught between the growing frequency and intensity of climate-related disasters and the persistent practice of land grabbing. In a number of contexts, these phenomena are compounded by the involvement of military actors in natural resource governance. The shift toward an increasingly militaristic model of governance was seen as potentially undermining the rule of law, while threatening the fundamental rights of indigenous peoples and local communities affected by displacement, land conflicts, and ecological disasters.

Through this international academic forum, FH UGM called for critical reflection on the urgent need for policies that are transparent, civilian-led, and oriented toward the protection of human rights. Such an approach was considered essential to closing the social justice gap and ensuring that natural resource governance remains within the bounds of the rule of law and the protection of citizens.

The panel featured speakers with strong track records in research and advocacy: W.J. (Ward) Berenschot, Professor of Comparative Political Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam and Senior Researcher at KITLV; Dorthea E.F.E Wabiser, Researcher and Campaigner at the Yayasan Pusaka Bentala Rakyat; Iqbal Damanik, Climate & Energy Manager at Greenpeace Southeast Asia; and I Gusti Agung Made Wardana, Associate Professor at FH UGM and Senior Researcher at LSJ UGM. The discussion was moderated by Sekar Banjaran Aji, Forest Campaigner at Greenpeace Indonesia and Coordinator of the Public Interest Lawyer Network (PIL-Net), and a UGM Faculty of Law alumna.

In terms of substance, the seminar contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — specifically SDG 13 (Climate Action), through its discussion of the impact of the climate crisis on governance and citizens' rights; SDG 15 (Life on Land), through its attention to land grabbing and the protection of indigenous territories; and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), through the reinforcement of reflection on the rule of law, transparent governance, and human rights protection.

Through an inclusive, research-based discourse, FH UGM reaffirms its commitment to generating legal thinking that is responsive to both global and national challenges. This effort represents an academic contribution to bridging social justice, environmental sustainability, and the rule of law in Indonesia.

Dalam rangka memperingati Lustrum ke-16, Fakultas Hukum Universitas Gadjah Mada menyelenggarakan International Seminar bertajuk “Land Grabs, Climate Change, and Disasters: Reflecting Rule of Law and Its Protection to Citizens in Recent Indonesian Politics” pada Kamis (12/2/2026) pukul 08.30–12.30 WIB.
