A delegation from the UGM Faculty of Law, through the Asian Law Students\u2019 Association Local Chapter at Gadjah Mada University (ALSA LC UGM), participated in the ALSA Lex Weeks 2025 National Mediation Competition organized by ALSA LC Universitas Padjadjaran. In this event, the UGM Faculty of Law delegation achieved outstanding success by winning first place as well as all the awards, including Best Claimant, Best Respondent, Best Mediator, and Best Case File.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The UGM Faculty of Law delegation consisted of six members, including five competition participants: Gerald Xaverius Chandra (2023), Cindy Christina Amelia (2023), Grace Lidwina Rubberensia Br. Bukit (2022), Rayhan Alam Riyanto (2022), and Enola Sholeil Febian (2022), as well as one team official, Fatima Aliyya Raihandra (2024). The delegation\u2019s faculty advisor was Herliana, S.H., M.ComLaw., Ph.D.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year\u2019s competition carried the theme \u201cMediation as an Alternative Dispute Resolution for Share Acquisition Disputes.\u201d This theme highlights the role of mediation in resolving share acquisition disputes\u2014a complex and strategic form of corporate dispute in the modern business world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through this competition, participants were tested on their ability to design effective and constructive dispute resolution strategies using a mediation approach. In the preliminary round, each team prepared a mediation dossier consisting of the legal positions and interests of the parties\u2014including the Petitioner, the Respondent, and the Mediator\u2014based on a fictional case scenario depicting a corporate conflict during a company acquisition process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The final round then brings together the top teams in a mediation simulation, where participants are directly tested on their persuasive communication skills, legal empathy, and professionalism in guiding the dialogue toward an amicable settlement. The dynamics of this simulation reflect real-world situations between business entities and investors seeking win\u2013win solutions amid business conflicts that could potentially harm all parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Faculty of Law at UGM\u2019s participation in this competition is a tangible manifestation of law students\u2019 commitment to honing their problem-solving and interest-based negotiation skills in the realm of alternative dispute resolution. Furthermore, this event serves as a vital learning platform for developing sensitivity toward corporate and investment issues that are becoming increasingly relevant in the era of economic globalization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is hoped that through this event, Indonesian law students will gain a deeper understanding of the essence of mediation as an efficient, fair, and business-relationship-sustaining means of dispute resolution. The achievements and experience gained from this competition are expected to serve as a stepping stone toward broader participation at the national and international levels in the field of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
