This initiative is a concrete manifestation of PKBH UGM’s contribution to enhancing public legal literacy and promoting the protection of creative works in Indonesia.

This educational event featured Dina Widyaputri Kariodimedjo, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D., a lecturer at the UGM Faculty of Law and a member of the Center for Intellectual Property, Competition, and Dispute Settlement Mechanism Studies (CICODS) at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), as the keynote speaker. The event was fully supported by UGM Faculty of Law Master of Litigation Law students Arsyad Surya Pradana and Wika Desta Qatrunada, who served as organizers.

The main topic of this event was the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR) for creative professionals. During the session, IPR was divided into two categories: copyright and industrial property rights, which include patents, industrial designs, trademarks, geographical indications, trade secrets, and integrated circuit layout designs. The speaker, Ms. Dina Widyaputri Kariodimedjo, provided concrete examples of how various types of IPR can coexist simultaneously within a single product. “A single product may encompass various intellectual property rights; for example, a batik bag features a batik pattern protected by copyright, the product label constitutes a trademark, and the bag’s shape can be registered as an industrial design,” explained Ms. Dina. She also emphasized the importance for every individual to proactively recognize their rights and protect their creative works as tangible evidence of creativity and innovation, stressing that these deserve to be valued, respected, and protected by everyone and by the law.

Arsyad Surya Pradana then concluded the discussion with practical information on the ease of accessing intellectual property registration. He emphasized that the registration process for copyrights, trademarks, and other intellectual property rights can now be easily completed through direct access to the official website of the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (dgip.go.id). “For MSMEs, trademark registration is currently available at a lower cost of around Rp. 500,000.00, provided they obtain an MSME Recommendation Letter,” explained Arsyad. This MSME recommendation letter can be obtained through one of three relevant authorities: the Cooperative and MSME Office, the Trade and Industry Office, or the Tourism and Creative Economy Office.

This legal awareness campaign offers a number of crucial benefits, particularly in raising public awareness—especially among creative professionals—regarding Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). IPR itself is divided into Copyright and Industrial Property Rights (including patents, industrial designs, trademarks, geographical indications, trade secrets, and integrated circuit layout designs). This understanding is reinforced with concrete examples of how various types of IPR can be associated with a single product, such as a batik bag. The public is also encouraged to proactively recognize and protect their works as evidence of creativity and innovation that deserve to be valued. Additionally, this broadcast facilitates access to information on IPR registration, which can now be done online via dgip.go.id, and provides important information regarding reduced trademark registration fees (Rp500,000.00) for SMEs, subject to a recommendation letter from the relevant government agency.

This strategic collaboration between PKBH UGM and RRI underscores a shared commitment to disseminating relevant and accessible legal information, in line with national efforts to strengthen the creative economy, provide legal certainty for innovators, and ultimately contribute to sustainable economic development in Indonesia.

Furthermore, this initiative supports a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the improvement of public legal literacy; SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) through the protection of the creative economy sector; SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) through strengthening the IPR-based innovation ecosystem; and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by providing access to justice through legal knowledge. Legal outreach like this is a concrete step toward bringing regulations closer to the public and creating an inclusive space for legally protected creativity.

Writer: Arsyad Surya Pradana (Recipient of the Student Legal Education Grant)

Fakultas Hukum Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM), melalui Pusat Konsultasi dan Bantuan Hukum (PKBH) UGM , bersama Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) Pro2 102.5FM sukses menyelenggarakan siaran penyuluhan hukum bertajuk “Santai Siang: Karya Kita, Hak Kita: Menyuarakan Pentingnya Hak Kekayaan Intelektual bagi Pelaku Kreatif Yogyakarta”.
