As part of its 79th anniversary celebrations, the Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University (FH UGM) held an international seminar titled \u201cDigital Enhancement for the Blue Economy Support Ecosystem\u201d on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. The seminar brought together academics and experts from various global institutions to discuss the role of digitalization in supporting the blue economy ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moderator Laurensia Andrini, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D., opened the discussion session with an introduction on the urgency of digitalization in blue economy management. The use of digital technology in the maritime and fisheries sectors was a key issue in this discussion, particularly in enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of the maritime sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first presentation session featured Prof. Mr. Dr. Sybe de Vries, Professor of Digital Economy at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. In his presentation titled \u201cEU Governance on Digital Markets,\u201d he explained how the European Union regulates digital markets to ensure transparency, fairness, and sustainable innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second presentation was delivered by Raquel Lorenz Costa, Ph.D., a UNESCO consultant from the University of Lisbon, who spoke on \u201cHigher Education and Its Role in Enhancing the Blue Economy.\u201d She emphasized the importance of higher education in supporting and accelerating the growth of the blue economy through innovation and research-based policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The third session featured Aulia Riza Farhan, ST, M.Sci.Tech, Ph.D., Head of the Center for Data, Statistics, and Information at the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, who participated virtually. In his presentation titled \u201cDigitalization for Optimizing Indonesian Blue Economy Management,\u201d he discussed how digitalization can improve the efficiency of marine resource management in Indonesia and support the sustainability of marine ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the presentation of the material, the seminar continued with an interactive discussion session that gave participants the opportunity to ask questions directly to the speakers. The participants\u2019 enthusiasm was evident in the various questions they asked, ranging from digital regulations and policy implementation in the blue economy sector to the potential for cross-border cooperation in technology-based maritime resource management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event concluded with the presentation of souvenirs to the speakers as a token of appreciation, followed by a group photo session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through the hosting of this seminar, the UGM Faculty of Law once again reaffirmed its commitment to supporting technology-based legal and policy innovations to strengthen the blue economy at both the national and global levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
