The Centre for Law, Gender, and Society (LGS) at the UGM Faculty of Law, in collaboration with the PKBH FH UGM and the Women's and Children's Empowerment and Protection Consultation Institute of Fatayat NU Depok (Lembaga Konsultasi Pemberdayaan dan Perlindungan Perempuan dan Anak Fatayat NU Depok\/LKP3A Fatayat Depok), conducted a legal outreach session on the Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence for community advocates (pendamping) in Kapanewon Depok, Sleman, on Sunday, September 29, 2024.\nThe session was attended by 16 participants from LKP3A Fatayat Nahdlatul Ulama PC Sleman, and four LGS representatives: Sri Wiyanti Eddyono, S.H., LL.M.(HR)., Ph.D.; Diantika Rindam Floranti, S.H., LL.M.; M. Ryandaru Danisworo, S.H., LL.M.; Arimbi Fajari Furqon, S.H., M.H.; and Firda Imah Suryani, S.H.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The outreach program aimed to identify, map, and respond to the need for strengthening the capacity to prevent and address gender-based violence within the community surrounding members of LKP3A Fatayat Depok. The program was organized in recognition of the strategic role of LKP3A Fatayat Depok, whose members are often among the first to become aware of cases of violence against women and children in their communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The program specifically aimed to: (1) provide outreach on the legal framework surrounding gender-based violence; (2) facilitate discussions on efforts to prevent gender-based violence, particularly through LKP3A initiatives; (3) assist in developing problem-mapping and prevention strategies for handling gender-based violence in partner villages together with LKP3A members; and (4) discuss forms of assistance and support that LP3KA members may provide when encountering and participating in the handling of sexual violence cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A key theme of the session was the intersectionality of vulnerability and the impact of gender-based violence. A woman who experiences gender-based violence may have different experiences depending on her status for example, whether she has a disability, her socioeconomic background, or other factors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sri Wiyanti Eddyono offered the example of pasung (physical restraint) of women with psychosocial disabilities a practice more commonly found in rural than urban areas and noted that women with psychosocial disabilities are disproportionately subjected to pasung compared to men, often ostensibly to protect them from unwanted pregnancy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The outreach program also included discussion and reflection sessions, during which participants shared their experiences related to gender-based violence. Through these discussions and reflections, participants began formulating strategies and response mechanisms for the prevention and handling of gender-based violence. This demonstrated an increased level of awareness and strengthened capacity in addressing and preventing gender-based violence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The outreach supports SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). LGS FH UGM extends its thanks to PKBH FH UGM and LKP3A Fatayat Depok for this collaboration, and remains committed to ongoing efforts to prevent and address sexual violence in the community<\/p>\n\n\n\n
