Sexual harassment is one of serious issue that sadly happened among students in school environment. According to data belong to Yogyakarta Special Region Office for Women\u2019s Empowerment and Child Protection, Yogyakarta was recorded as one of the region with a high number of sexual harassment cases on children, with 414 cases on children around the age 11-17 years old on the year 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Therefore, the Faculty of Law UGM, through the Legal Aid Consultation Center (PKBH) held a legal counseling in SMAN 1 Bantul on Friday (19\/7\/2024). This legal counseling was intended as a concrete effort in reducing the number of sexual harassment cases among students with providing a proper knowledge on the legal rights along with the mechanism of existing legal protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event, held as part of the student legal counseling grant program, raised the theme \"Legal Protection against Cases of Sexual Violence in School Environments\". This activity aims to provide understanding and increase awareness of 10th grade students about handling and preventing sexual violence in educational environments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This legal counseling was conducted both in Pringgodani Room with Rizky Hidayat (2022) and Jeremy Kevin (2022) as the speaker, and in the Jodipatati Room with Reiyan Auliansyah (2022) and I Negah Gardhita (2022) as the speaker. This legal counseling was divided into 3 sessions, those as material presentation regarding sexual harassment, question and answer session, and game session with doorprize. In the material presentation, the speaker also provided a space for discussion. In the question and answer session, there were several active students that asked the questions to the speakers. Lastly, in the game session, the students who can answer the quiz from the presentation was given UGM merchandise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this legal counseling, the students are given the material regarding sexual harassment that included the definition, forms of sexual harassment, along with the regulation that regulate the sexual harassment crimes in Indonesia, such as Law No. 12 Year 2022 concerning Criminal Acts of Sexual Violence, and Child Protection Law. This legal counseling also educated the participants regarding the right for the underage victim, along with the preventive steps to protect themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This event is contributing a direct impact in improving the awareness of the students on the importance of creating a safe school environment. This also include the importance of reporting on the sexual harassment cases, along with the protection and guidance mechanism. Aside from that, in this event, we also conducted a survey to the students in SMAN 1 Bantul to deeply know the condition of the similar cases in this school. From the survey we have found the cases that we proceeded to report to the school authorities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This legal counseling is relevant with the goals in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) especially with the 16th goal on \u201cPeace, Justice, and Strong Institutions\u201d. This legal counseling was expected to create a peace in the school environment with reducing the number of sexual harassment and gender discrimination cases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This legal counseling also supported other SDGs goals, such as the 5th goals on \u201cgender equality\u201d with focusing on handling the sexual harassment cases with female victims. Through the education on the legal mechanism, the female students are expected to be empowered and knowing on the self-protection form the harassment itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This program is one of the contributions by the UGM academic community in carrying out community service, especially in supporting sustainable development through strong law enforcement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Legal counseling at SMAN 1 Bantul is an important step in building legal awareness among students, as well as creating schools as safe places from all forms of sexual violence. This activity is expected to be an example that can be adopted by other schools, in order to create a safe and equitable educational environment for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
