ALSA LC UGM (Asian Law Students' Association Local Chapter, Gadjah Mada University) once again provided a forum for informal legal discussions for its members through the DIALEKTIKA activity, under the auspices of the Law Development Division. This activity aims to improve thinking, expressing opinions, and discussing skills in an informal forum at ALSA LC UGM. DIALEKTIKA #6, held on Thursday (September 19, 2024), raised the theme \"Academic Integrity Violation Cases,\" which addressed the rise in academic violations through the use of \"jockeys\" and Artificial Intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The discussion covered three main points: the limitations of ChatGPT's use in academia, the existence of \"jockeying\" practices and their drivers, and the threat posed by \"jockeying\"<\/strong> to students' intellectual abilities. Participants discussed that using ChatGPT as a reference tool, similar to a search engine, should not be problematic if used correctly. However, ChatGPT is considered a form of academic violation when the AI's results are directly copied by users without critical thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The practice of \"jockeying\" is defined as the act of having academic assignments performed not by the student themselves, but by others. The discussion also highlighted that \"jockeying\" exists due to demand from students who feel they lack the capabilities, while on the other hand, there are parties who offer their services to earn income. Furthermore, a lack of understanding of academic ethics is one of the reasons why this practice persists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Patricia Nerissa added that the practice of \"jockeying\" poses a serious threat to students' intellectual abilities, as it hinders the development of critical thinking skills. Students who habitually use \"jockeying\" will have difficulty entering the workforce, particularly in the legal field, where analytical skills are crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Syabilla Himaningtyas highlighted that law enforcement regarding academic misconduct, particularly for students, has not been optimally regulated. Currently, only plagiarism in academic papers in higher education is regulated by Law Number 20 of 2003 concerning the National Education System, and this does not yet cover the school level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This discussion is expected to raise participants' awareness of the importance of academic integrity and ethics, as well as mitigate violations by spreading awareness about the threats of using \"jockeying\" and ChatGPT.
